now I just have to clean it

not looking forward to THAT!!! it is such a mess. Deep litter and mice dont mix well. Plus it is my cage storage building, so the chickens have been perching on some of the cages (which are now poo pooed to the shelves

Oh and I figured out whom my barn visitor is finally - ..... deep breath .....

I
have
!!!RATS!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! this does not make me a happy camper. I wouldn't have guessed rats (well, I was in denial, I guess) but tonight I actually saw one - not a huge one, but big enough to make me go "NOOOOO!!!!!!" (it was probably the size of my hand at least - not including the tail)

Gee, Shelley, do you think maybe that is why Cris couldn't see any duck eggs in that hole the other day? they were probably eaten before they cooled

And with the extra square baled hay in there, it is VERY inviting, I'm sure they're telegraphing all their rat buddies and telling them to come on down for the winter.

Looks like I'm gonna be on rat patrol trying to get rid of them. I'll have to teach Toby that rats are fair game - he'll help me get rid of them I hope.

now, if I could just get the possums to eat the rats, then I could trap the possums and bait the coyotes with them and then kill the coyotes.... Oh wait, I forgot the hawks - well, maybe they can lure the rats out into the open for the possums to get to.

I'd rather have a possum in there, actually, they move slower and don't run in packs.

I may have to get a barn cat, I guess. Hate to do it, but maybe hubby will agree to it, if it'll take care of the rats (do cats hunt rats? or just mice and smaller critters?)

man!!!! I hate rats!!

Some cats hunt rats, but they would at least keep them from getting into your coops. Just be sure to feed the cats where you want them to sleep, and they should stay in there. I also would like to get a few barn cats, but dad's dog would run them off
sad.png
He won't tie her up, cause she does kill the rats, but cats would be able to get into where the rats hide easier.

I don't think dad's lost any more pigeons since moving his pit bull up there by their coop. So at least that helped. Did you take birds to Sano? I didn't see them there. I've got about 30 birds boxed up and ready to go. I just have to get about 30 quail to go as well. I wish I could sex them, but they're not breeding much, so the males' glands aren't swollen. I guess I'll just put colors together and let whomever buys them do what they want to with them

I've still got more chickens in there than I would like to have, but at least I got quite a few gone. I'm not taking any cochins or blue/black OEGB, most of them are babies, so I'll wait till spring when they are bigger for those. I think I've only got one rosecomb left, a blue rooster, so that's good. I wish I could get him, but he sleeps on top of the wall that is up on the new coop, almost impossible to get him!

I have at least 4 birds that have decided to roost in the trees
hmm.png
That's a new one! I know there's got to be more, but that's all I can see. However there are some that I know are 'here' that aren't in the building, or the rafters of the trailer roof, so they must be in the tree as well.

Hopefully the sale won't last too long, with having 2 different auctions going. Maybe not everyone will leave before mine go through

Yeah I was gone from Sano by 4:00 or so - I didn't see you at all, musta showed after I left. I did see Larry, but that's about it. It was pretty thin on people when I was there.

But, I did sell out (cause I practically gave them all away, but they're gone, so I don't have to feed them all winter.) And hubby bought me a Stevens 20 guage pump shotgun
big_smile.png
Needs a safety on it (safety is gone) but it shoots nice, not as much kick as his 12 guage. The older guys with the red truck towards the entrance had it - only paid 85 bucks for it

I plan to put a pad on it, too, for what kick it does have, to lessen the hardness on my shoulder.

it is so cold and wet out there, I feel so sorry for my critters out in this crap

Daylight Savings Time SUCKS!!!!!!!!!

tell me, how ridiculous is it that starting tomorrow night I'm gonna have to do evening chores at 4 PM!!!!! I usually do chores at dusk -- feed them, get them settled for bed. Well, dusk is early afternoon this time of year, and Daylight Savings Time makes it even worse!!! What this means is that I'm gonna have to get up earlier in the morning to do Morning Chores

I just got used to getting up at 7AM, now I have to get up even earlier.

DST ought to be abolished.

stoop!d idea.

Hello KY friends,

I'm a KY boy by birth (and by college- UK) but now I live in Philadelphia.

I will be in KY for Thanksgiving, and I'm looking for a pasture raised organic turkey (heritage breed would be great) in the area of Bullitt, Jefferson, Scott, or Fayette counties, or anywhere between Lexington and Louisville really.

My family were all farmers at one point, but now they all give into the modern convenience and low price of factory turkeys. I'm hoping to change that this year! If I can find some "happy meat" I may even eat some, after 10 years of vegetarianism.

If you, or someone you know sells responsibly raised Thanksgiving turkeys please send me a PM!

I had considered that - but I have to do some business in the USA, so I need to keep track of what the rest of the world is doing.

it is gonna be cold from here on out, I'm afraid - highest temp the next week is gonna be 61 I hear.

but it isn't raining, I guess I ought to have gone to Casey County anyway, just to window shop. Oh well, next spring I'll go.

Well, we went over to the MILs so Layne could hand out candy for her like he has done the past two yrs and this year the subdivision was flat out D E A D. They didn't even get half the kids they had gotten in the past and most of the houses had no lights on...Sad... I was thinking that alot of folks must have gone to the block party on the square that a local church is hosting. This is the first year they have had it and they've been advertising it almost all month. Oh well, that meant Layne got the rest of the candy.
