Howdy back at ya. My experience with guinea they dont much get bothered (once they get big enough) by much of anything, other than when they decide to cross the road with cars and trucks running 70 mph.
I live right on Ky HY11 I had 30 free ranging last year. Before they went free ranging they where running with chickens no problem at all. These guys did a number on the ticks did not see a one last year.

Have a bunch french guinea keet's @ $4. per if anyone interested. Hatched out 5-26-10

Thanks Pop for the info. So what exactly are french guineas?

I must have some psychic chickens. Karen writes and tells me she sent Layne some eggs to put under one of the two broodies. I am trying to decide how to handle the broody situation... Should I put them under Union and move hers to Boo or should I put them under Boo(since she covers more nest) until her and Unions other eggs they are already on are due to hatch and then move eggs around so someone sits an extra week... While pondering this and waiting for the eggs to arrive Macchiatto(Cortnis Mottled Java) apparently senses she'll be getting a batch of eggs soon and started to go broody yesterday by running Boo off her nest... And everyone else that tried to get in to lay. Then Boo had her eggs back by bedtime and Macchi was on the perch. Well Macchi claimed her own nest today and has been screaming at anyone who comes near. But she will allow me to pet her as she is screaming at my hand. Karens egg arrived this morning so now Macchi has real eggs instead of the ceramic ones she was on. Wierd how that happened so conveniently and right on time.
Here she iss growling at the camera and fluffing threateningly.

Sneaky girl! She did it backwards! Not supposed to sit on the nest during the day, then leave it at night!

Well, congrats on the broody (I think), pretty soon your chicken house will look like mine

ETA: She looks so totally different! Really filled out nicely

Leighton must have gotten the one that had more white? Or did she just molt out darker?

Yeah she turned out really pretty. Her black has the prettiest green sheen and her feathers are so soft not stiff feeling. I think Leighton got the lighter one... But I believe they get more white at each molt, I know that is how the Ancona does. I agree that I should have kept both of them, I hate that he lost her.
I have learned that Javas are more filled out and rounded than Anconas(which are more like the Leghorn build) and Javas are broodies where Anconas are not. Was reading about both breeds today. There are other differences like the legs and combs but I already knew those.

If they are like other mottles, they start out with a lot of white (like my little baby one), then molt out with mostly black, then each molt they get more white. That's why my older hen has a lot of white mottling, and the younger one is pretty black yet. I'm sure it helps that the older one doesn't seem to be as good of quality as the younger one either

Broody, bah! I have been trying to find a few pullets of a "reliably" broody breed and every time I go looking all I find is nothing. I have a BO that went broody last year but she is roo scarred now and wont behave normal. My kingdom for a cochin pullet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha.
Matt
Although I did find a nice green egg EE

Matt, EE are usually broody, but if you reeeeeaalllly want some broodies, I have tons.

They are mostly bantams, but they can sit 8 or so LF eggs. Or you could go to an auction or something and get you a couple of OEG hens, they are super-broodies as well

Well Shelley, if Rosey(blue Andalusian) stays in the box I will have another broody. And she isn't even supposed to go broody... Cochin, BA, EEs, and even BR yes, NOT Andalusians! I had to pull out the big rubber water pan I use in the winter and make another nestbox out of it because I have no nests left for the remaining girls to lay in. And Rosey and Macchi won't let anyone in to lay. P'nut Butter shoved her way into Boos nest to lay her egg.
