What type of heater? Be very careful with those around shavings and such...also the dust....a fire can easily happen. I have heat lamps hanging over my waterers about 5.5 feet off the ground and the waterers are not doing too bad...some ice chips in them but not frozen solid.

Have you seen the thread about the water heaters made out of cookie tins? Looks like it would work pretty good if you don't have 23 different places to put water like I do

Thanks for the warning!
It's a new heater that shuts off when it tips over. We have it sitting up off the floor of the coop, and my husband wired it to the wall to stabilize it should the chickens somehow knock up against it. They would have to fly up and into the heater -- but who knows what a chicken will do!!

My little flock is doing OK at laying too. Averaging 2-3 eggs from 4 hens per day. Plus today they finally went out in the snow. At least they darted from the coop to their favorite sunny dust baths under the crawlspace - they sure didn't linger on that cold white stuff!

My kids have been home FOREVER. I think we got 3 days in after break? Other than that they have been out since early December. Getting out to pick up chicks from Shelley was a fun diversion, and Chick TV is a hit in the living room.

. Does any one in KY raise Wellsemurs (sp)? Would love to add a few hens to my flock.

*Just wanted to add if any body would like to meet somewhere close to pick up these chicks we can make arrangements. My zip is 40330.* Thanks everybody

We would be willing to trade for:
Bantam or Standard Cochins
D'uccle
Seramas

Hi everybody, I was wondering if anybody would be interested in about 9 splash and 1 blue silkie chicks.
I had hatched them out from eggs I ordered. Hatched 1/2/2011
They all would make great pets or for somebody just getting started in silkie breeding. The ones that would make great pets have only 8 or 9 toes. The ones that do have 10 toes would be good for somebody just starting in silkies.
I am asking $2.00 a chick straight run and they would be pick up only. Thanks smile

Want em to hold them for you? You know I would. I'm a real friend like that....and maybe DH wouldn't go totally through the roof about it.....wink wink

Out 11 BR hens have been incredibly productive with eggs this winter, probably because they're so young.

In the last couple of weeks, we've had 5 days where we've gotten 11 eggs, but they've been averaging about 9 each day.

BRs being as large and thick-coated as they are, they really don't seem to mind the cold weather at all.

I have 8 nine month old buckeye pullets for sale. They are culls from Laura Haggarty. They either have single combs or black in their hackles. They are great layers and super friendly but unfortunately for me, the eggs are identical to my wyandottes. I don't want to accidentally incubate buckeye/wyandotte mixes. I bought them for $15 each. I will sell them for $10 each. I am willing to drive halfway to deliver if you're far from Scott Co. PM me if interested!!
