Hello fellow Kentuckians. I'm new here, and fairly new to KY. Back in the fall of 2005 my wife and I got the crazy idea to buy her sister's best friend's house and 7.4ac in rural Fulton, KY and leave the metropolitan life in Nashville. Fulton is in the extreme SW of the state, right on the state line with TN, about 45 miles south of Paducah. The house was built around 1900 and came with a 2ac lake, a 60x75 pole barn, and a whole mess of cats. We have one son who is almost 3, one more child due in the fall of 2008, 3 basset hound mix dogs, a 55gal tank full of tropical fish, one indoor cat that adopted us in the parking lot at Wal-Mart, and currently 9 barn cats. We just recently got the idea in our head, really my head, to wholeheartedly embrace country life and raise chickens. We're soon going to be ordering some chicks, probably an egg layer assortment, and join the craziness that chicken-keeping seems to be.

I look forward to great discussions with you all!

I also wanted to say hello to everyone down the Bluegrass parkway, Western Kentucky Parkway, Pennyrile Parkway, and I65. We rode tripped down to the Fairviewamish sale on Saturday, made a loop through Bowling Green, through Mammoth Cave Park and home. I waved as I went by. Thought about everyone I was passing, and wondered how the chickens were doing!

Sounds not unlike our trip last weekend. We drove from the Mississippi to the mountains and back again to visit Williamson, WV - Purchase Parkway, WK Pkwy, BG Pkwy, Mountain Parkway, US460/US23. Back on SR80 to Bowling Green, then Hopkinsville, Cadiz, across Land Between the Lakes and back home again. All told about 1000 miles of beautiful Kentucky countryside. I thought of you folks at Shady Lane Poultry Farm in Winchester as we passed by that lovely town.

The farthest trip I will be making today is to the chicken coop to feed the babies. I am terrified of bad roads. I am a bad enough driver on good roads, so you will not catch e out driving in any adverse weather unless I absolutely have to.

Hello all -

I'm in Columbia, here. We have about 4 inches of snow out there.

Too bad it was still warm enough today to thaw the MUD in the barn/lean-to. Poor horse, I have to tell her it is a "spa treatment", so she won't feel neglected or abused. We (hubby and I) really have to do something about the drainage situation there as soon as possible.

We missed a lot of the snow, here, I think. I heard it is worse up north of us. The hail was interesting last night, though. Pea sized, lasted for about a half hour.

Peace -

Hey Casey,
I got most of my chickens at the Sano auction. Small world. I never expected to see so many people close by me on this list - with so many members, though, I suppose I shouldn't be surprized.

Peace -

Welcome KYBOY!

Is everyone thawing out today? We've gone fm around ten inches of snow to about 3 left in the grass. And it's melting quick. It was kind of fundriving to work in the snow Saturday morning. It was so quiet and peaceful.

I have a pretty silver leghorn roo named Chicken George, and his "main hen" who is a black leghorn. The other are mostly mutts, LOL. I also have 6 new hampshire red roosters, LOL. I explained that on another part of the forum. I got them from a lady at Sano who told me they were NH Red Pullets, almost ready to lay. I'm not sure if she knew they were roos or not, but I was a newbie and had no idea, tee hee. I have since put up a sign on the coop that reads "Red Rooster Inn" and has a stencilled red roo on it. I gotta laugh at myself - all my friends do, LOL.

The "Bad Boys" free range - they get too aggressive with the hens if they are inside. This morning I went out and they all came running to the front door to greet me (they wanted to see what treats I had in my pockets.) They roost in the barn at night, so they go in and out when they please.

This week, though, I am getting some babies from the feed store here in town. I can't wait !!!
I am hoping to get some Black Australorps or some more leghorns. I prefer the brown eggs, but my two "top chickens" are great birds, so I don't mind having more leghorns.

Peace -

Hey Milk Dud, I am in Lexington. My nephew bought a place near Paris. I will be out there a lot this year teaching him and his wife how to raise a garden. Of course I am setting up chicken pens on his place so I can have some more breeds out there. I can only keep the Silkies here in the city.

Do you know what breeds you want to get to raise there yet?
