New member here. I have had chickens before on my family farm but now I am doing the backyard chicken thing. We have RIR hens and a mixture of bantams that are growing out. I just need my husband to hurry up and build a coop, they are outgrowing their temporary garage coop.

Question for y'all. I will be turning off the brooder bulb today on my 6 week old, 26 chicks. At what age can I start free ranging them? I have two coops to divide them up in but on is a dirt floor (with sand on top) that is still drying out. I dont think it will ever dry if it stays this cool. So I will be waiting before I stock it with a dozen pullets. I can only imagine what the light brahmas would look like. Good thing its a downhill slope.

ThiefPouter06: I have mine out free ranging anywheres from acouple days after birth (if they are with their mommas), to 1-2 weeks old if the weather is nice & sunny (I've got 7 that are 2 weeks old right now, they get to go free range in a grassy penned off area, just for them during the day), I've got some chicken that where born in March free ranging with my big flock & sleepin in the coop. But this is all what works for me & my chickens

Well I have no free ranging adults to show them the ropes and mine have no fences. So I think I will wait til they are too big for the coopers hawks to pack off.

You could always start letting them out in the evening before dark. They should go back to their coop pretty easily. Then you can sit out there and watch them while they range so they don't become hawk food.
