Kentucky people

Welcome <g>.

Us south central folks have sort of monopolized the thread lately, but there are a lot of kentucky posters in here.

What type of chickens do you have?

I've got - oegb, cochin bantam, Japs, large breed oeg, mutts (large breed), a silver laced wyandotte, easter egger, black australorp, and some spitzhaubens. I'm sure I've left something out, in there, LOL.

Been busy trying to organize chickens so I can start breeding next spring - I need to stop widening the type I have and concentrate on how many more I can get of the type I have already

I see lots of people in south central KY. What part? I am in Franklin, but all my chickens are up in Bowling Green (Franklin does not allow any in town). Only have broilers at the moment, but might branch out into eggers next year.

can you let them roam in a fenced yard? wouldn't that just technically be an oversized pen?

Thankfully I'm outside the city limits and mine can freerange in my yard when I'm home. (Gotta cover the run, though, because the 'lorpies have figured out how to fly over the fence & then taunt the others who can't get out of the run!)

I'm In Columbia (Breeding, actually).

We've also got Somerset, Columbia (other side of town), Edmonton, umm.... did I miss any South Central folks? LOL

I know someone on here is from Hopkinsville, so that's over closer to Bowling Green.

Peace -
Meriah

There aren't any laws here, that I know of. I'm outside of Columbia, about 12 miles or so toward Liberty. Thank God there aren't any laws, if I had to pen my chickens up, I would have to get rid of most of them!! All mine free range, and I wouldn't have it any other way. It broke my heart when I had to tie up my dog

but she was killing my chickens, and I live with dad right now, and he wouldn't let her come inside. I just can't get rid of her!

She was a lot smaller than the others. She had been acting weird, when they were in their cage. I built a bigger tractor for them, and they all perked up real well. This one was ok for a while, then started acting weird again. I just think she had something not right about her. I don't think she was sick...didn't see any weird looking poo, and nobody else is acting weird. Oh well, sometimes they just die I guess. I don't have any others that are sick. I had already treated them for cocci, so I know it wasn't that. I always treat my babies with the water meds, my feed store no longer carries medicated chick start. Isn't that crazy???? So that leaves me with 2 roos and 1 pullet after all. Oh well!!! I still have my silkie babies, if anyone in the area is interested!!! I guess whichever jap boy crows first gets to stay, cuz I really don't need any more roos!!!
These are the ones my dad calls the 'gang bangers'. There are 8 boys and (now) 2 girls. I started with 8 and 8 (counting mama). and have lost all girls except 2. I can't keep pullets around here!!!

Here are the silkie babies, but not a very good pic...

Welcome Bantyhaven... I too am from Lexington. It is called the "loose leash law" either your pet is to be penned up so as to not be a hazard to others or it has to be on a leash.

Every now and then I will take my NH x JG roo for a walk with a leash on one of his legs above the spir. People just look...

That is too funny, I can just see the faces now and the wheels spinning in their heads thinking...what the...

a few years back i had a pet racoon ,raised him from a baby two weeks old.after he reached one month we would walk around the block with no leash when he got tired he would climb up my leg and sit on my shoulder,he never offered to run off and no one turned me in to the police, thank god.after he growed up he became real mean, biting me quite often so i had return him to the wild, growing up i fed him food which he would normally find in the wild,so turning him loose ( his freedom ) was the right thing to do.i visit him often in the woods and he seems to like it where he is.

Welcome BantyHaven, I too am new and from the Lexington area. (Wilmore) I have a varied flock of brown egg layers, 3 or 4 EEs, 5 Cuckoo Marans, 1 silver-spangled Hamburg, 1 mutt, and several black stars. My flock is old now (about 3 yrs). I'm sure there are more breeds, I too need to keep more of one breed for a consistent carton of eggs, but I love the varied look and have a rainbow of colors in each dozen. I just ordered a whole flock of RIR poulets from Ideal, but had to throw in about 30 extras, just can't help myself. Chickens are like candy, so many great choices! I love the dark brown eggs best, they just seem to "taste" better.
