Kentucky people

I am previously from Western KY, the Madisonville area. But grew up near Owensboro. We just bought a Cockatiel two days ago from a pet shop in town. He is the most freindly, cool thing ever. He was not hand-fed, but you would never know it. What a sweetheart. Do you raise them? Mine is right now perching on my laptop screen, just loves to be with his people.

Ok folks, I got ta show you some of my new chickens...

I got the trio at the auction, and I got my Nana from Cindy (cthrash1)

Here is James Brown - the Godfather of Feathers -

James, and his ladies Aretha (Franklin) and Etta (James)

And last but certainly not least - the sweetest chicken in the entire world - Nana

I have yet to get pics of the japs I got from Shelley - they are too spastic to get into a group and have them hold still, LOL. BTW, Shelley, I lock em up in the brooder cage at night only now, during the day they get to go out into the population, but they pretty much stay inside the coop yet - they are so small. Man are they active!!!

Oh yeah, and I have to get pics of Stevie Ray and his two girls (Double and Trouble). I got them from Cindy, too.

Peace -
Meri

I let mine, and the silkies out of their tractor today. They seemed unsure as to whether or not they REALLY wanted to go!! I also let my mama with the 18 chicks out, since the babies are all about 3 weeks old now. They are pretty much hanging out by the tractor too. I couldn't let Gertrude out, with her brood, yet, cause she wants to fight too much if other chickens get too close to the tractor. She will have to wait until the dutch banty mama and kids venture out a little more! Besides, her babies are only about 1-2 weeks, and this is her first brood, so I kinda worry about her free ranging!
I will post pics of my mamas, whenever my stupid batteries for my camera get charged. Supposedly, they are already charged when you get them, but they weren't...that's what I get for not checking!
<edited> I did finally let Gertrude and her brood out...the other hen was in her tractor, and all herchicks followed, so I locked them all up. Gertrude decided to go into the tractor with the japs and silkies that were too 'chicken' to go out, and start beating everyone up, so she got locked back up too. I had to get ready to leave anyway...it was sale day!!

YEP!! You have to come see them next time you are out this way...They are precious. Layne is being so responsible handling them, the seller taught him how to pick them up and hold them. The seller picked the pairs for us and I got 3 of the 4 colors he was selling(not enough money w/me). We got a pair each of blue, silver, and khaki and we will go back in two weeks and get a pair of chocolate...All Calls. Layne wanted a Sebastetal(sp?) goose and I was like "Um no"

...But they were so pretty with those dust mop feathers. Hey, we can talk eggs this Spring

then you could put them under a broody and when they hatch and hubby sees them you could be like, "Oh dang that Cindy!!! She was supposed to give me chicken eggs!!! Now we have to go and build another coop."

OH I'm so bad!!
Course with my luck he'd find some Guinea eggs laying around and send them to me, and like the naive fool I am I'd hatch them and still think they were chickens til they got a little odder looking.

Shelley, I opened the cage this morning my babies are in and waited and waited and they wouldn't come out. Well, their loss for a while because I had to go back up to the house so closed em back up. Don't want anyone picking on them. Although we already found that one of them is a real spitfire...Layne(DS) was holding her on his lap a little too loose and she jumped off and was immediately met by our buff Cochin bantam neck feathers out and she stood right up to him...They had a stare down and went separate ways. It was too funny. Will open their cage again this afternoon when they go out to freerange.

LOL I was just telling Shelley I'd probably be doing that - hatch em out and say "Oh, look, honey, my chickens laid some weird eggs!!"

I can't wait to get an incubator - but it is probably best that I do wait, LOL Or I'd be overrun with babies this fall, and have to winter them over when they are still small.

Oh, gotta tell ya, LOL - I had Nana outside playing/scratching, and we walked over to the main coop where George and the girls were all hanging out in the front yard. (Nana follows me like a puppy dog, LOL) and she met George for the first time. He was very nice to her, and when a hawk flew over (I was giving them all treats at the time), he ushered her under a big weed they have for hiding by the coop. He is such a good roo.

I'd have let her keep out there with them, but I know they wander further than her little legs could carry her and they move faster, too, I didn't want her to get lost, so I had to put her back inside for a bit.

I'm thinking I'll probably match her up with Hoss, it'll be interesting to see what color babies I get out of those two. That trio seems like sort of a "closed group" they don't much socialize with anyone else. I think Hoss would be more welcoming to her. Now if I can just convince Spazz to go out with the other chickens of her own kind!! LOL silly hen.

Oh, and as for guineas... I dont' want any more than I already have, so any eggs I find and/or hatch are going to someone else, LOL. 5 guineas is MORE than enough!!

Peace -
Meri

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I asked many people at the sale what the dairy goats sold for. Well evidently I asked everyone that was selling, cuz noone would give me a straight answer!!! I checked last week and this... Only answers I got were 'they have been selling pretty good' and 'it varies'...So sorry, but they definitely do have dairy goats there. the goat part of the auction usually starts around 7ish though.

Maybe you could put a window in the top of the wall, up pretty high, so the guineas could let theirselves out. I don't think the chickens would be able to fly up that good. Not sure though. could put some kind of perch on it, so they don't break their necks if they miss!! When are you gonna come see my babies??? you don't have to take any, I just like to show off!!

Well, the perch is about 3 foot short of the roof, and the chickens get up there fine, LOL. The guineas slept in there last night, and didn't cause a fuss when I didn't get out there until about 9AM, so maybe they'll be fine, although tonight they chose to sleep in the tree again.

I'll be coming out to see them soon, but tomorrow I got to go to TSC and Lowes (I got a long list, LOL) so it'll probably be next week sometime, maybe. I'll get with ya on a day, since I don't have Jon's schedule yet for next week.

Peace -
Meri
