Kentucky people

Some questions for all you Kentuckians.

1. I have 12 hens and 8 ducks. Only a few are laying right now but come spring when everyone is in full swing that's going to be a lot of eggs. I would like to sell some to help pay for feed. Rural King has a program where if you buy X amount of bags you get one free. It was 12 fifty pound bags, now they have downsized to forty pound bags and you have to buy 20!

What do I need to know regaurding the laws? I know about marking out the info on cartons if you reuse them, but thats about it. Do I need a permit or anything?

2. When I want chicks, I like to hatch my own from my own birds. The only problem is when I leave just a few eggs under the hen none hatch, and when there is alot I get tons of babies! I see a lot of people sell the extras. Is there really a good market for chicks? How do you advertise? I tried advertising in the Show-n-Tell last year for some ducklings and got zero calls.

I know quite a few people that sell eggs, and I did not know there even were laws. I would say to call your county clerk, or something similar, at least they would know who you need to speak to.
A friend of mine sells a lot of chicks/chickens, as well as other types of birds. She just has signs posted around town, with the types of birds she has, and her phone number. You could also advertise on craigslist, or over a radio station; we have 2 that I know of in my area, one is called the 'man about town' and another is 'trading post'.
As far as chicks go, do you have an incubator? If so, you could set your hens on golf balls, and put some eggs in the bator. Then when you see what's developing, you can give them to her, or wait till they hatch, and swap her out.

I remember you saying that in the post I made, but around here the people at the courthouse don't know much and always act like you are interupting their day when you call. I thought maybe someone would know from experience.

I have an incubator, but its a still air Little Giant and it is terrible. Temp fluxuates all over the place and humidity will never stay constant. I have only had about 3 eggs hatch out of three dozen.

Put a fan it your LG...You can use a pc fan(used maybe 3 -6 dollars) and you can find the connectors like what comes with the LG fan upgrade kits at an electrical supply or something, they're the kind that slides over the main wire and you slip the fan wire in the second slot and it clips shut...I can copy and e'mail you the instructions that came with my kit so you will know how to connect and what to ask for at electrical supply. If I was smarter when I got my fan upgrade kit I would have bought a used pc fan instead...Much cheaper same purpose. Anyway after I installed the fan upgrade my LG has held temps and humidity great...Although I do have to add water more often.

WE're glad to have you...The more the merrier!! Bunch of great folks on this site and a whole bunch of great info. I have learned sooo much since joining. I just started into chickens for the first time in my life back in March so am new still. But now I can actually tell some breeds and sex some breeds, one of my favorite things to do is guess. But my most favorite thing to do is chat with all of my new friends. Only drawback of being a SAHM, not much social interaction.

I got a pc fan off ebay for $4 incluing shipping, and use an old cordless phone power cord for the cord, just wired them together. I had pretty good luck before then, but have even better luck since.

I wouldn't worry about it then, unless you are going to sell the eggs to a store. If they don't know, then you can't get in trouble right?

But I can't use Ebay. I don't have a credit card and I really don't understand Paypal at all. Most sellers require those for payment. Hmm... but my mom does know the guy who fixes all the computers for the school system here. He has worked on my laptop many times, I bet he can get me one. I don't know anything about electrical wiring or anything though. I would need some VERY detailed intructions.

(Sighs) Never mind that idea. My mom nixed it as soon as I asked her. We had a duck hatch out and sometime during the night he had a stroke or something. Now he is physically and mentally handicapped. She says that I cannot use the 'bator to hatch any more eggs because they may turn out handicapped too.

If I want babies I'm just going to have to hope one of my hens goes broody!
