Shelley - Okay, sounds great, I can see her when I go over that way with Meri's chicks...

Meri - did you want to brood my whole bunch or just the ones from my chickens...The reason I asked is because Ron said I could run the extension cord out to the shed behind the house for the heat lamp, so you don't have to take them all if you don't want to...Let me know. I will be hatching weekly as far as the schedule shows, until the middle of November(I broke down and ordered 3+ more eggs, just shoot me now), so I'll bring your babies sooner than that. Doesn't look good but if there are any Cochins developing after this next candle Sunday, I'll let you have them and I'll keep the Silkies. I'll let you know if there is anything on Sunday night.

Well, it's up to you. I'll have the eggs hatched from my own bator, but I am thinking of maybe putting the spitzs back in with James and Etta and putting all the babies into one of the breeder cells - that way I can brood all of them in one place. It is gonna get cold, though, so that might not work. (supposed to get REALLY cold come Monday - winter is already here!!

) I'll probably get another bag or two of bedding to throw in there if I do so they can snuggle down deep into the stuff. I'm not sure if it will be possible to do it that way or not, I'll just have to see if it'll hold a good temp in there. Maybe I can throw a couple of wood panels up on the screen between, to hold in more heat that way.

So, if I do them all together, then yours would be mixed in with the others - but they'd be older, so probably not hard to pick out of the bunch. I'll leave it up to you - let me know what ya decide before you come over, LOL so I can be all set up for that many babies.

Peace -

Ok will let you know...Hey you could just tack up a big tarp in between the coops it would be cheaper and still serve the same purpose. As long as you have the heat lamp hanging over them you shouldn't have a problem. Maybe put some 24 -36 inch chicken wire around them to start so they don't wander too far from the warmth. If I bring my bunch to you I'll bring my two heat lamps too. And a bag of feed, you said non med right?

Oh guess what I just realized...Our anniversary is on Election day this year... whoot
roll.png
I told Ron he can't forget this year. He remembered it last year but didn't even get me a card...It was fine with me because at least he woke me up with a cup of coffee and told me happy anniversary and at our 20 we'll renew our vows again(did it at our 10 too). But Cortni wouldn't have it. I didn't know it til later but while I was gone she laid into him because of not doing anything for our anniversary...Made him feel major guilty I guess. She's such a soft hearted girl, hope she finds a good man someday. And he better remember their anniversary or he'll experience the wrath of Cortni!!

I also got a GPS for my anniversary gift from Ron, well it will be here next week. Now Cortni and I can go Geocaching.

The parents birds are also chosen for specific traits, so the ones you could buy (Cornish roo and a Rock Hen) would not be like the ones they use to breed the super chickens. You could do regular hatchery (or breeder) cornish and plymouth - but it still wouldn't be quite the same. Plus I think Cornish (not the cornish cross) chickens are ugly. The cornish crosses get so big so fast they have health issues and just do not live long - plus their size makes breeding hard, egg laying in less and the product you come out with would not be true to type.

Plus, Cornish Crosses are just plain nasty birds.

Yeah, I think I feel so cold because I have a little bit of a bug. My head has been stuffed up for three days now, and I just feel "ick" not "sick sick", just plain ick.

I've been doing some more research on meat birds (dual purpose) and I am thinking it wold be cool to have Plymouth hens crossed with Orpington roo. Someone suggested that and I checked it out - the Orpington gets a larger breast, is somewhat early maturing, and the Plymouth Rock is early maturing with a medium sized breast.

I'd love to have you guys come out and see my place. I am about 12 miles the other side of town, though

Probably total from your place it is about 22 miles.

If you go out towards 61 South, you'll get to my place.
I can PM ya with directions if you want.

I do have pics of the coops up on my webpage on BYC - the newer (breeding) coop is under "New Coop" (page three, I think). But if ya talk him into coming out here, then you can see all my chickens and donkeys, too, LOL.

Let me know if ya want to come on over, and I'll PM ya with directions.

edited because I can't spell today

Meri

Yeah, go ahead and PM me the directions. Not sure when we'd get there, dad is being a butt today. He is having trouble with his electric fence, and it is really ticking him off. Then tomorrow is the sale, and Saturday another sale. My luck it will be raining both days, which would do no good to come then anyway.

But yeah, go ahead. I'm the one that puts gas in the dang car anyway, so if I want to go somewhere he better take me!
(Then he can drive your hubby nuts for a while!!

I don't usually do medicated, but it probably doesn't matter much. I wanted the non medicated for the ones I'd be eating sooner than later - but even those I won't be eating until 4 months at the earliest. I usually just get the Purina Sun Fresh starter.

A tarp might work, if I can find one, LOL. Would certainly be easier - I could hang some hooks on that wall and just clip it on through the ring holes in the tarp. Heck, I'll just go buy a tarp - that's a good idea (and so much more room for brooding.) I have a hook in the ceiling for one brooder lamp, and one for the water dish - but that will end up being on the floor, anyway, so I got two hooks (and lots of beams to hang them off of).

happy anniversary early (cause I'll probably forget by then - heck, I forgot my own anniversary

I had thought about doing a real wedding once - like for our 25th or something, maybe a ren faire type thingy - fun costumes and the whole bit. But, shoot, it's too much expense and work.

Ok, going to PM ya now (taking a break from the corral).

Meri

Trying to talk dad into going now, I asked him, but he didn't answer. I got the M.O. from one of the people wanting eggs, so maybe I'll wait till I have to go take those to town. Idk, cuz Monday is Cris's birthday, and I need to get some cupcakes or something for him to take with. I'll call you and let you know when we are gonna come.

Hubby says the tarp is a great idea, he'll put it up for me - and he also told me to plan a brooder coop and he'll build it for me next summer!!!! So I'll have 8x8 for brooding - so yeah, bring along any chicks ya want brooded - the more bodies the warmer they'll be.

I am SOOOOO Spoiled !!!!!!!!!!!!

I can put them in the play pen in my sewing room until they're a week or so old, though, too, if I need to (depending on how cold it gets.)

ETA - for that matter, I can put the playpen into the cell until they get old enough to find the heat lamps better.

Peace -
Meri
