Thank you for your condolences Ky people...It is more like a bad dream...The first thing I did this morning was to look out the window expecting to see no feathers all around...Meri said she had a hard sleeping last night, I did too I kept thinking I heard dogs outside.

Meri, I'll call you tomorrow when I leave to head home...The lady I'm supposed to get eggs from said she didn't know if she'll have enough for a dozen...I told her I'd buy whatever she had.

Meri and Cindy, I placed an order with Ideal today for their Assorted Standard Pullets I will be getting 25 chicks the week of December 17th, If you want to you are more than welcome to come up to Louisville and take your pick of the chicks I get to helop replace the ones you lost. I also promised some of the extras to two other ladies one from shepherdsville and the other is from across the river in Indiana.


Depending on how I do with the remaining chicks, I might order another 25 from McMurry just to see the difference.

Sorry about your loss..

reminds me of a situation i had many years ago in Norfolk Va. while i was in the Navy. Had 8 doe rabbits and if i remember correctly about 60 bunny babies long story short came home one day a caught 2 dogs in my back yard. They had jumped my 4' chain link fence and proceeded to kill every rabbit i had didn't eat any just killed em all grrr....

Anyway that was 30 years ago. I now use electric fence both the single strand and the portable net fence. The portable net is really good for chickens you can put this 164' long fence up in 15 min. and it keeps out most everything that bothers chickens great for free ranging. heres a link fyi. http://www.maxflex.com/Nets_page1.HTM Just In case anyone is interested. And one last thing i use shade cloth over the fencing to keep out the birds of prey. we have lots of red tails hawks up this way.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure most of us have experienced the pain you and your family are feeling. If you go on a restocking road trip, let us know. I saw several offers already, and could donate a few chicks.

Ok, I am stuffed (who isn't?).

But, I got the hatcher done, and am testing it out for temp and humidity control.

So, my dear Hubby, who questioned why I needed one in the first place - says to me (with a gleam in his eye and a screwdriver in his hand.....) "ya know, this one is kinda small, are ya sure it's big enough ? we can make another one, a really BIG one"

I KNEW if I could just get him to help me build ONE, he'd want to build a bigger one for me. He keeps running in there to check the temp and humidity, then reporting to me while I'm on here.

He is so cute!!!

So, I'm sure we'll be building another one sooner than later.

I am sooo spoiled

Oh, and after Jamie (neighbor) called me this morning wanting more eggs, Hubby says next spring I need to have more laying hens

- this from the man who swears he could care less about the chickens (yet he has built me four coops and a homemade incubator/hatcher - Oh, and he is begging me not to cull the banty coop --- methinks he doth protest too much).

I told him the chickens I'm hatching now will be dual purpose, so will give eggs, too. I guess this means I can hatch even MORE chickens.

By his last report, the hatcher is running 98-102 degrees (with the thermostat) and the humidity is high - so I need to tweek the humidty. It turns on as soon as it hits 98 and turns off as soon as it hits 102, so not bad temps, I think, for a hatcher.

Well, gonna go watch some Tv with my sweetie

Hey Meri!! There is an auction on ebay for 30 austrolorp eggs right now, with less than a day left. They were at >$3 about an hour ago when I checked it!! You could get those and let me hatch them for you, since I have a bator almost empty! Then you would have plenty of laying hens for next year (provided they aren't all roos!

Wow that thermostat you got from me works pretty good! I'll have to get some more so I can make some bators to sell at Sano!!

I think I have figured out what the problem is with my incubator. I think my thermometer is off!! I had 8 eggs due today, and I thought all of them had quit around day 14. There were two that were close to fully developed, but since my hen's eggs always hatch at least 2 days early, I had given these eggs up for dead.

I checked them a little while ago, and one had pipped the air cell!!

So I guess I turned the temp down too far!! I will have to steal the other thermometer from the button bator to double check the temps in that one. I have 10 button eggs in it also, I don't want to lose them!!
