Cindy,

I thought I would show you what the 3 mo old roo looks like and the hens. They are molting so forgive their neck area. They do not have the beards and muffs anyway. Sorry they may be big pictures.

when I got home today, while I was unloading hens, that same BA chick fell out of the nest again - I'm thinking for that reason alone, I ought to contain em on the ground, so the chicks don't get out (the nest is about a foot off the ground) and can't get back in.

I'll do it later, though, I have to run Jon into town to cash his check and buy something at walmart

Plus, I got to get me one of those soft pretzels, again

btw - the Amish guy I got the hens off of was very cool, nice family. Some of the Amish I've met around here I wouldn't trust any further than I cold throw them, but these folks were very nice.

The hens are 6 more Eleanors - so I got six Light Brahma hens in with Jose' now. He's a happy camper, to say the least

Plus, I bought a couple bales of hay off him, since I was nearly out and I need to have enough to fill nest boxes this winter.

Well, looks like I probably just missed you! We just got back from walmart, among other places. Had to go pick up my lakenvelder eggs
big_smile.png
I opened the box and they were in an egg carton. I was thinking 'oh no!!' Every time i have sent eggs in cartons there have been some broken. But these all arrived just fine! Hope I get a good hatch
fl.gif
She sent 12 eggs!

Gosh no! I have 4 already! I'll have to give 2 of them back soon, then I can focus on my own birds eggs. They don't lay that much, so I should be all right with them!

I have hatches due on the 10th, 12th, 13th, 23rd, 25th and 27th of this month, plus another one due on the 3rd of next month! Crazy!!! What was I thinking? The 10th, 12th, and 3rd are all ducks, and another 12th is quail, though I don't think those are fertile
sad.png
They were from my bird that disappeared, so I guess I've totally lost her.
The 13th hatch is frizzles and seramas, 23rd is silkies
fl.gif
, 25th is ameracaunas, and 27th is the lakenvelders!

Come on babies!!!

Well, I moved Miss Piggy and babies (and eggs, cause she had a hissy fit if I didn't) into the brooder bin in the coop under a heat lamp. She didn't want to go at first, kept hopping back into the nest box and complaining to me, but then she saw the whole mess was in the brooder box with fresh hay, and she jumped right in.

I don't think any of those eggs will hatch any more, but I figured she could keep them another day or so, to get her happy in the brooder box before I take the eggs, too. When I take them, I'll bring them inside and candle them, and put the moving ones in the incubator - ya never know, maybe they just need a bit longer. It is cold out there, though, and I hate to leave them too long in case she abandons the eggs and moves her babies to the other end of the brooder box.

When I came home everyone but Cinn was in the coop - no idea what happened while I was gone (or maybe they just got smart and figured out it was warm in there) but they were all in there hanging out. Of course, now that I am home, they all left again and went out into the yard to scratch. Toby was out back of the house running in circles like a squirrel, so maybe he did chase something off.

The new hens are doing ok - not happy, but doing ok. They were full time free range at the Amish place, slept in the barn with a couple of roosters and some banties (pretty roos - no idea what kind, but they were buff colored and HUGE - had nice tails, too).

I asked him what he sells his eggs for (he has a huge flock of golden comets for egg selling) and he said 1.50 - which is what I was figuring to charge once I get the supply up a bit. I'll still sell to Jamie for a buck, since he is my neighbor, and he has gotten me more business (and given me many many empty egg cartons). If I had to buy the egg cartons it would be about 35 cents more per dozen, anyway, so I'll charge him the lesser price. He has more egg cartons over there, too, so I may score another bunch of them. He was saving them to soundproof his music room, never got around to it, and the music room became a computer room, so he has all these cleaned egg cartons in his garage. (he's already brought me at least 60 of em)

Well, Adam, goes back saturday. Then next week I'm gonna be swapping coops, so I can put the dual purpose in the main coop (more room, they're bigger) and the banties down in the lower coop. I hope Jose' and Mr. Speckles get along ok with the extra room to move away from each other. They've got about 12 girls between them, now, so maybe it'll work. I put the new girls in with Jose' so they both have a few to flirt with in the meantime. I'll have more to add into the flock later, too.

I'm gonna put the bantam cochins into the pen with the babies I got out there and the other banties into Mr. Speckles' old coop cell. The babies are about the same size as the bantam cochins are, right now, and with Hoss and Rudy in there, Chickaboom ought to be kept in his place. (he has WAY too much testosterone for being so young - can't wait to butcher the little meanie.) The colors/patterns coming out on him seem to indicate he is a mix of Light Brahma and White Rock - all I know is that he's BIG.

wow it is REALLY getting windy out there again.

I'm here, finally, was watching Ghost Hunters with Adam.

Hubby finally got home, still has to go back tomorrow. Poor guy was at the courthouse for almost 12 hours today.

Miss Piggy seems to absolutely love the new brooder box accomodations. At least now that chick can't fall out of the nest

Plus, with the heat lamp directly over part of it, she might feel better about leaving them to go eat and drink (and poop).

I hope it's nicer tomorrow, cause I really need to clean coops, and I don't want to do it with the wind whipping and the cold temps slowing me down.

I'll wait to clean the main coop til after I am ready to move chickens, that way I can do a thorough clean - and if it is nice I can lock the chickens outside in the run while I open the door and just get it all out of there, then Oxine the place down top to bottom again.

Well I guess I'm not quite done incubating...

The folks I bought my very first batch of eggs from just contacted me. I got 2 BBS Ameraucanas out of that batch, one was a splash and the other a blue... Just got old enough to know they were girlys then those dogs killed them. I told her I would like some eggs when she started selling them again and told her what happened, both her and I thinking it would be Spring, that was fine. Well, she just said they are getting 3-5 eggs a day.

My Blue one looked exactly like her hen that she won ribbons with in shows that she has a pic of in her Eggbid listing when she is selling. Lucy and the Splash used to hang together and the Blue and my bantam EE used to hang together.

I am so excited but at the same time I'm so tired of incubating and brooding

Guess I'll have to Pull one of the bators out of retirement.

yeah, I really mostly need to rake the bedding around in the lower coops - the poo is very much composted in there, cause it's dirt floor - the top cell seems the worst, and that is the one that they go outside all day!! What in the Name of All That is Holy are they EATING???

Anyway, I got those two hay bales today, and I figured I would rake the pine bedding, then throw a bunch of hay on top, for them to eat, scratch in, play with, etc... I figure a flake in each cell would keep them occupied for a day or two
big_smile.png

The nest boxes need cleaning, too - especially Miss Piggy's nest box she used. The hatched out egg shells got eaten by the other chickens, so those are already gone. But she pooed in there, and it is icky.

so, it looks like a day to spend with the chickens
