Ok, I got my first chick ever be hatched in my bator, and he was having a ruff time. Are they supposed to come completely clean out of the shell, because this little one is still attached to looks like mucus or something

Oh, what the heck, Happy February First - I'm officially declaring it to be SPRING!!! I refuse to believe that it is still winter, or that we will get any more really super cold weather, and it is only going to get nicer and nicer as the week goes on. By mid month you can pack away your coats and haul out that bikini - run wild, boys and girls. You'll be nice and suntanned by March First !!

meri... I believed you and because the sun was so bright I stood up and ran outside just to enjoy the nice spring day...

As I stood there in my undies and bare feet I realized that something wasn't quite right. Probably my head. LOL

If my neighbors saw me

they might think the same thing. I then had to re read your post and saw that you said in two weeks.

The fact that I found an old bottle of Pinot Noir under my kitchen cabnet yesterday and it goes well with scrambled eggs has absolutely nothing to do with this no matter what you may think.

It's just that you can take a country boy out of the country but you cannot take the country out of the boy.

There have been more than a few occasions growing up where I had to get out of bed and check on the animals and I only put on my shoes. or less.​

Shelleyed recommends putting a wet paper towel or a wet sponge in the bator to help with the humidity.

I picked up half of a shell one time and the chick was still attached. I could have pulled its yoke sack out of it abdomen but I got lucky.

now, even a normal hatch will be all sticky looking, and wet feathers plastered to their teeny bodies. They don't look very cute when they are born (Much like human babies, I don't care what people say - human babies are NOT cute when they are first born - except to their own exhausted, pain medicated parents - who would probably think that a mongoose coming out would be beautiful just as long as it is finally OVER!! .... but I digress.... )

They also will have a bit of Ick sticking to their butts, on mine it looks like poo sometimes, and sometimes just like a tiny bit of egg left on there. Just leave it alone and it'll dry and usually fall off and the chickie will be fine and dandy. They will crawl all over the bator and usually wipe it off on another egg, which looks really pleasant, but doesn't seem to harm the other eggs when it sticks to them.

just keep an eye on the chickie, it often will take them a few hours to find their land legs and they'll look sort of squishy and weak until then. If they are still very squishy after 12 hours or so, then I might worry a little bit.

No they won't drown, not at this age. They will walk in it and make a mess, so you'll get to clean it a lot!

Car once again not starting, toe hurts I kicked it. My boys willing to help yesterday, they are hiding today.
Guess I will get AAA!
The Universe is getting a big chuckle at my expense lately.

Last night I had to go get Jon at work, at about 9:00 - so I go out and back up as usual, knowing it was pure mud everywhere, I also knew that there was no way I could see well enough to back all the way out of our 1/4 mile driveway. The backing lights on my truck don't work...

So I backed into the hayfield, hoping I might find the one last remaining piece of solid ground in Kentucky this time of year.... no such luck. Then the 4 wheel drive wouldn't engage... so I am sitting and spinning and rocking, tearing up hubby's hayfield, and he comes out and looks at me/the truck/the hayfield in disgust and says "I coulda told ya this would happen".
This where I try very hard not to A) Laugh or B) Smack him -- both reactions would have made him even more frustrated :::snicker::::

So, we finally got the 4wheel drive to engage (usually I have trouble making it DISengage after I've had to use it - it is sticky). And I pull out easy peasy no problemo....

By the time I got back home and hour later, hubby was considerably more calm

he realized, I believe, that I was right, and there was simply No Other way to get out of the driveway.

yep - motor vehicles certainly have it out for us.

Mario~~Look into the pop bottle waterers, they can't get in them. They are similar to a parakeet water bottle, but bigger. Meri ordered some online. You may be able to talk your feed store into ordering some for you.
