Well, I had another hatch and have another pip - this hatch is drawing itself out - last one did too - I wonder if it's my humidity or temps? But, this is only day 22, so not too badly drawn out, I guess.

so far I'm running a 75% hatch rate this batch - better than I have been getting.

Setting only the top coop, all the eggs are no more than a day or two old when I put them in (like the eggs would be 3/12/09 and 3/13/09) so the eggs aren't too far apart on being laid.

I somehow got the George egg in there -

poor baby, it's the oddball of the bunch.

I have two girls I hatched awhile back I may keep (again
lau.gif
) I kept Gump and Fluffy - these two are also one of Mr. Speckles's and one of George's - the George pullet is from the easter egger - she is starting to look very pretty - and the other pullet looks like Fluffy, I call them Itchy and Scratchy.

George is gonna have a lot of mutt girlfriends by the time I'm done

but I love the mutts - and since I'm not breeding them, just keeping them for eating eggs, well, I may as well keep the ones that are more friendly.

Frodo doesn't seem to be thriving at all - I think she was just not meant to survive. She sits around a lot - doesn't move as much as the others do. Eats ok, drinks ok, just looks "dumpy" all the time. She hasn't gained much weight or size, either. Jr.'s sister did that - got to be about three weeks old and died on me - failure to thrive.
Jr. grew up fine, just the other didn't. Maybe it's a genetic thing - so I'm not gonna hatch out any more of those eggs, either.

Benny and Joon were hanging out by the water tonight, when I went out to close chicken coops. I asked them go inside for me, so I could go make dinner and they just looked at me. So I stood there a minute, and lit up a cigarette and asked them one more time "Please?" and they went in, turned and honked at me, and settled in

silly geese.

My splash Polish rooster needs a new home ASAP. I just had to go lock him in the coop. Anyone want to come get him?? He's free, and he crows...a lot. I was hoping to make some cute Polish babies with him, but I don't want to risk getting complaints and losing all my roos or worse all of my chickens.

Shelley you're a doll!! I owe ya one

Shelley emailed me this morning and sent me some links with pics of geese --- Joon is a Pomeranian goose! Still not sure about Benny - he may still be a mutt (yay mutts
wink.png
) but Joon looks to be pure Pomeranian. I wasn't sure if she was Shetland or Pom, but I found a close-up of the Poms facial feathers, and they have the slight bump (not a big bump like on Chinese).

Maybe Benny is mixed with the Poms (they must have had Poms at that farm) because he has the coloring of them, but is so big, I think he still has some embden in him - maybe not, I'll check into it further.

Thanks Shelley

again - due to the double paunch, I'd have to say he is not Pom (or not pure Pom) Poms have single paunches.

eta yet again - checked feathersite - he definately has Embden in him with his incredible size - but that's cool cause A) I like mutts, and B) if they mate, the babies will be at least 2/3 Pomeranian

(so they'll have the pretty coloring, probably)

No problem

When I saw those pics it immediately reminded me of your guys. I'm glad you figured it out, at least part of the way

Note to self: NEVER let the silkies brood together!! I had 3 broody silkies. One hatched a few days ago and one hatched yesterday. The other just started brooding her eggs. Two of them were together in the tractor, the one that hatched 2nd, and the new broody. Evidently, the one that just started brooding didn't know what that peeping thing in the egg was, and pulled the baby out of the shell. It was dead
sad.png
The one that hatched the other day had moved back into the silkie tractor. Thanks to Cris, she lost one baby 2 days ago. He had taken her and babies out of the tractor. One baby got to far away and was killed by a young cockerel. The other baby apparently got mooshed by the other silkies.

So I took all the eggs away yesterday, and today they are all roaming around the yard. Next time they are getting seperated, and locked up. That way, Cris can't get them and they can't overcrowd each other.

But on a good note, Gretta the game has hatched 2 chicks. I took a lot of bad eggs out of her nest the other day. Nugget the OEGB had been 'donating' eggs to her, so she had a ton. I figured all the silkie eggs that she had had were no good, since they should have hatched on Monday last week. Today I went and checked, and she had a baby white silkie
love.gif
I don't know where that egg came from. Evidently the girl that started brooding last had layed an egg somewhere else, and it had been given to Gretta. Idk though, I don't think I have added any eggs to her nest since she started? Is it possible for an egg to be sat for 28 days and still hatch?

Shelley, sorry to hear about the Silkie babies, but glad you have a white one, even if it was a surprise. I opened up the coop today and everybody except my broody OEGB finally came out to run around. I put the 4 week olds out there today as well. They have their own little coop outside with plenty of bedding and water and feed. They were just trampling over the baby banties in the brooder. Of course little Miss Sasha kept wanting to get to the chickens in the run. For the most part they ignored her which just po'd her off even more. And the smaller chicks kept pretty much to themselves and managed to back off the bigger ones when they got to pushy.

I have to get another hutch for the bunnies, they have been together long enough for the doe to be bred and I don't want to have him keep bothering her.

I also opened up the pigeons cages today and let them out. The fantails pretty much stayed in theirs, but the homers came out, and of course a couple of them decided to invade the fantail's section. So I pulled them out and shut the door on the fantail cage to keep the homers out. I don't need any fights going on between the cocks over the hens.

Off to bed, busy day tomorrow.

I'm up, already done with chores, trying to wake up now
lau.gif

Geese are so much easier to do chores for than donkeys and chickens!!

I go out, I open the run door, they go out, I close the run door - their done for the day (unless Benny fills the pool with grass and hay, then I get to clean it out in the afternoon - after I'm awake and it is warmer out.)

Of course, now Benny has discovered the joys of porch treats - so every morning when I finish everyone else, he watches me go back to the house, to see if I'll come back out onto the porch with treats or not. I didn't this morning yet, I ought to do that after I hit post on this
lau.gif
.

We've changed our plan on where to put various chickens once again (and going with my original plan, what do ya know!!) I'm putting the babies and pullets and cockerels in the top coop - once I get Mr. Speckles's new run done down below. That way if someone comes over to buy chickens here, I don't have to risk them breaking a leg getting down to the lower coop.

Top coop is on reasonably flat ground (as flat as it gets around here) and easy access to the run and everything. Plus all my spare cages are in the top run on the nifty shelves we built to hold them. I can seperate troublemakers or seperate birds that are going to auction the next day, etc...

Plus, it has the added benefit of keeping MY chickens totally away from strangers (and whatever they might inadvertantly carry in on their boots or clothing).

I'm hoping my truck is done today. Dave is coming over in a couple hours after eggs, so I'd have to wait to go get it til after that.

Got one ducky trying to hatch - hope it makes it - no action on the other 6 eggs yet, but this is just day 26 so I'm not worried.

well, better go find a treat for Benny.

different breeds also. Mostly dual purpose yard art and the extra eggs I sell.

What type of birds do you have?
