Kentucky people

Well, I've discovered why Benny and Joon took a walk the other day (well, hubby discovered it, then showed me).

They were out at the edge of the yard standing and honking loudly towards the road. The honks were going across the holler and bouncing back from the other ridge.

They then went looking for the "other geese" over across the holler

(I had to go chase them back again)

stoop!d geese.

Yeah, I get the notices for it, never been yet.

Let us know if it's a big swap, or just a small one - not worth going if it's too small (ie: only three or four people with birds).

We expect a full report

I've been considering going - just have to convince hubby it's worth the drive (and the fee to set-up to sell).

I started going last year..it's decent sized if the weather is good.

Cool, I'll have to get out there this summer when it warms up a little bit more - I've always got something to sell.

So, I go to town to drop Jon off at work earlier - and it is about 10 degrees warmer in town!! I shoulda gone to Sano - might not have been as bad out there as it was up on the ridge here (we still had wind and cold when I got home).

Oh well, next week, maybe.

I did stop in at Day & Day

didn't buy anything, but had to look.

All the chicks looked the same and the guy said he couldn't tell which were which either.

I really don't need any more chicks, anyway.

I put the older chicks in cages in the coop - and split the playpen group up into playpen and cage so they have a bit more room, now.

Still no improvement on baby duckie - I guess I'll see how she is in the morning

She is fluffy and moves a bit - but doesn't (or can't) stand at all.

She's pretty too - she's a silver splash one (out of the blue/khaki, I'm guessing).

well, gotta go get Jon at work...

Mojo Chick'n :

I will never do cornish cross again - those things are freaks of nature.
It disgusts me just looking at them. Suckers better taste good to make up for the ICK factor.

Tell me more, I just bought some chicks??

Well, the first week I had them in with the regular chicks - after one week they were so fat and lazy the other chicks picked their tails off and their behinds bloody because they wouldn't move out of the food dish.

They are fat, ugly and dirty (they poop amazing amounts - and it don't smell pretty - been feeding them Flock Raiser for higher protein).

I've had them Three weeks on Monday - I only have 5 of them and they are worse for filth, smell, and just plain Yuck than the 30 chicks I have in the other bin. They also eat and drink nearly as much as the other 30 chicks combined.

I don't like to look at them (they are all about the food - they mob the front of the cage when ya come in - even if they have food still, they want it filled) they are only half feathered - because they grow so fast the feathers can't keep up with them.

These 5 have blukote on them (in various spots), also, because of the previous butt picking (now I think they are picking each other.

)

Three weeks and I'm already to butcher them!!

I'll stick to dual purpose from now on and if I get a single breasted bird rather than a big fat double breast - I'll just butcher two of them and make a big bag of thighs, legs and wings for another meal.

Just imagine the most dusgusting chicken you can picture - that is the Cornish Cross

When and where is the swap? Are there chickens who are older there or just chicks? Since I just started out and live in the city (Louisville) I can't have any roosters and they sent me at least one maybe two (my chicks are only a week old). Do you think there is somebody at the swap who would take my roo(s) once my chicks are grown up and I know for sure what they are?

Moonflowers, you are allowed one rooster and 4 non-crowing birds here in the city of Louisville. Or if you don't want the rooster you can keep 5 non-crowing birds. However as long as the neighbors don't complain, and you have a secure area to keep your birds in, and the city doesn't check up on you, you can keep a few more.

Of course that also depends on what part of the city you live in too. I live in Portland, right up against the Railroad switching yards, so I have nobody behind me, and my other neighbors don't care what I do. They just like it when I have extra eggs to give away, and if my garden is successful again this year, they are also looking forward to my home grown veggies.

I have a OEGB Roo, 2 OEGB hens, 2 Mille Fluer D'Uccle hens, 1 BLue Splash Silkie Pullet, 3 Production Red Pullets, 2 Barred Rock pullets, 1 SL Wyandotte pullet, 1 Americuana Pullet, 1 Black Headed Gold laced Polish chick (not sure of it's sex yet), 2 RIR pullet Chicks, 2 Buff Orpington pullet Chicks, 1 Easter Egger pullet Chick, 1 Blue Silkie chick, 1 black silkie chick, 4 Rainbow Layer pullet Chicks, 5 Assorted Bantam Chicks, not sure of their sex either. They are still in the brooder.

It's over in Glasgow, right off the Parkway, I believe (I google mapped it once) off of 90 down a road that goes along side the Parkway. Easy to get to - but sort of far from Lousiville. Of course, if you take 65 down, and get off on the Parkway, it would only be about an hour or so drive, I guess. (I made it to E-town from Columbia in an hour and half last December, so about the same distance - maybe slightly further for you.)

They have both adult and chicks, I think (according to the reminders I get, it is all types of poultry - talked in email to the lady who runs it she said there are a lot of bantams usually, too).

From the yahoo blurb... (she has a yahoo group just for announcement reminders)

Cleaned my hatcher tonight (finally got inside, been out working all day) and good thing I did!!

I had four call duck eggs to put into it Monday - had an internal pip on one, so put those into the hatcher.

Hope I have a better hatch this time - so far out of like 12 eggs I've gotten 2 ducks!! not a good ratio. I've had four hatch - but two died/two lived.

wish me luck.
