Sebrights are very flighty, and not good layers. Polish are almost as bad. If you want some really different looking birds that lay a decent amount of eggs, you should get some silkies or cochins. The LF cochin hen my dad has lays an egg every day, just like the 'egg layers' do. The eggs aren't quite as big as the reds' eggs are, but she is pretty faithful! I think Meri is selling the buff cochin girls she got from me

The key to getting a whole bunch of chickens with minimal space requirements and decent egg laying is to go with bantams. They are usually 1/3 (at least) the size of their LF counterparts (if they have one), eat less than 1/2 as much, and come in so many different varieties!! You could use tractors, a 5' x 5' tractor with a 2' x 3' coop would be plenty big enough for 3 or 4 bantams

I see you have a pygmy goat. Mine gave birth Tuesday to twins. They are adorable! Now the chickens have more playmates.

Just thought I'd drop a line. I had ear surgery which went very well. (I can hear much better in one ear now.) Prior to that I had to get things ready and culled my flock during the last of June and the first part of July.

Some of the culling was hard to do. I got rid of Rusty, Port, and Star. They were all over a year and a half old. They were getting contankoristic towards all the younger birds. I filled my freezer with several of the young ones that I hadn't named.

My neighbor cooked one of my delcon roos for me and it was one of the best chickens I have ever eaten! She has got to teach me how to cook.
The other two delcon roos now have a reprieve and I am breeding them with the hens to see if I can produce more of the same kind. This roo weighed about 9 pounds and dressed out at over 6 pounds. Big breast, thighs and drumsticks. They have been slow growing but grew big and taste great.

I just hatched out 18 of 19 eggs I put in the bator not counting 9 did not develop's that I culled at 10 days. So I am happy with this hatch. It looks like about 6 of them are Delcon crosses. For some reason the biggest eggs didn't develop, only the smaller ones.

I'm moving the Cornish to be with the Jerseys. I think I will be getting rid of Red the Jersey roo as well. He crows a lot and is loud.

Red is an F3 and I just hatched some of his F4's I had another F3 lined up but a fox killed him two weeks prior to me being able to pick him up. Bummer! I really wanted him, and had culled all the rest. I will have to hatch out a few more of Reds and hope for the best. I don't think the cornish roo and he will get along.

Jenny the Bear picked up some of my cornish roos. I think we are both happy about that. I keep getting people who want chickens but when I talk to them it become obvious that they are clueless about chickens and I am very reluctant to sell them any.

With cock fighting going on I am even more reluctant to sell my older roos. I sold a three quarters New Hampshire to a guy in Missouri for a Fly Fisherman Fly tyer. The roo had great saddle and hackle feathers for use in fly tying. He is going to breed him to some RIR that he had. Those kind of sales I don't mind.

I had to read about a months worth of posts just to catch up with you guys. Hope August is just as pleasant as July has been. Hope to see some of you'all at the State Fair around the 20th.

Ten things I have noticed since ear surgery has restored my hearing.

1. My bed creaks when I set on the edge to put my socks on.

2. Trains make a lot of noise when they pass by a block from my house.

3. My computer fan makes noise.

4. The microwave makes noise.

5. Roosters crow loudly, and it hurts when you are within three feet of them.

6. I work in a noisy place. (Muzac sucks)

7. The TV doesn't need to be nearly as loud as it use to be.

8. I no longer have to read lips for soft spoken people.

9. I have to get the AC fixed in my truck so I can leave the windows up.

10. Those little silent ones... well..., they're loud.
