I could do that. If it's close then I can go home if the crowd gets to me

no offence, anyone, I just don't care for crowds.

We could just have it at your house

I was thinking of maybe the fairgrounds there in Columbia?? There's a park and that building right next to it. Cindy said it would probably have to be rented though, any idea how I could find out??

ETA: And the crowd in Indy was so spread out that it didn't even seem like there were that many people there. If there's enough space to spread out, it shouldn't be too bad.

My dad would flip his lid if we did it here, anyone want to volunteer??

Does anyone have an idea of where we could do something like that?

I would host but as anyone that has been to our house knows, there is little to no parking. We would have to go a few days without rain in order to be able to park folks in our backyard because it is downhill then back uphill to get to the back. And no shade trees except around the coop(Those girlys are spoiled)... Well I do have about a 1 foot tall willow growing right now.

ETA: But I would most definitly love to attend one!!!!

Outdoor crowds aren't as bad - as long as there is room to spread out. For instance, Sano doesn't bother me too much, unless I go into the auction building... then people are shoving past and touching you... ick. I'm just not much of a touchy type person.

poor Jon is worse than I am - you have to warn him before ya hug him, and even then he only tolerates it.

I am not sure it would work at my house, though
lau.gif
no one would be able to find my house

I'm amazed every time someone calls me for birds, then pulls into my driveway without me having to go and find them so they can follow me in. I should find out what sort of GPS they use - cause not all GPS systems can even find this place

So, I went into the hatching room this morning, and all of the chicken chicks are crowded in a corner of their bin freaked out - Tried to figure out what was wrong, and notice the one at the other end of the bin didn't quite look the same
lau.gif
one of the golden quail babies had gotten in there (from three bins away) looking for a drink of water and some breakfast.

I had forgotten how resourceful those quail babies can be

Hubby and I came up with a plan to have water at my lower coop (at least for summer). We're gonna run a hose and install one of those "add on" spigots to the wood fence and attach the hose to it, so I can have water right there. I'll have to unhook in winter, and only hook it up to actually water them, but I can leave it there all summer - nifty, eh?

It wouldn't be a problem, but I use 5 gallon waterers down there, and they are awkward to carry up and down stairs or a slope when full (and heavy).

This morning I had to drag the hose down there to water everyone - it gets muddy and tangled and it runs on and on while I am doing other stuff - not a good thing.

I used to have a hose end that I could turn off to stop the flow - no idea where that went to.

ETA Oh, and I found one of the hidey spots the hens from George's coop are laying in - had ten eggs and some which had been there awhile but had been broken - there were maggots, and the stoop!d hen was sitting and trying to lay another egg there.
sickbyc.gif

I am seriously considering making George and his girls go intoa coop with a run for a week or two, see how they like being in lockdown until they can lay where they're supposed to again.

I could put them in the top cell and let my orps and cochins and BR out to play in the sunshine and grass.

hhmmmmmm.....

does anyone know anyone who would want to buy a new sportsman 1550 with the auto humidity pail. it is digital command center we have used it 3 times and it is still under warenty. we paid over 650.00 for it and are asking 450.00

Well, I decided to just let everyone (except Mr. Speckles's coop) out for the day.

The babies in the brooder coop are having a blast, and the orps and BR and Mr. Feathers are having a fun time, too. A couple of the orp girls found out what an electric fence is, and they all discovered that Blackjack (the donkey) likes to tease chickens by walking slowly but purposefully towards them with his head down (he doesn't hurt them, just likes to watch them freak out
lau.gif
)

Bubba discovered that you don't mess with a broody hen with babies, and they all discovered that the geese can be uppity if ya don't get out of their way. Mr. Feathers tried to take on the broody hen, also, but he gave way rather quickly
lau.gif
All she had to do was growl a few times, puff up her hackles and hit him once in the chest with her feet and he gave in. (it took Bubba far longer to figure out that he would not win the stand-off
gig.gif
I guess we know who's the slow one of the bunch.)

Jr's baby (now a POL Pullet) has Jr's mama instinct - all of the babies in the brooder coop seem to be hers (
lau.gif
all 150 of them). She was showing them where to scratch, and when they'd get lost (around the corner of the coop) and cry she'd run and herd them back to the door. I already have a Mama (donkey) and a Nana (cochin) so I guess she'll have to be Little Mama or Nanny Bird (I had considered naming her Mammy, but thought that might be awkward
wink.png
) . She even picked up a piece of food and dropped it in front of some of them
lau.gif
. I guess she gets to stay, she can just be the Little Mama of the brooder coop.

Hmm... maybe Auntie something
lau.gif
I'll come up with a good name for her, just give me a day or two.

I just hope they all go into their respective coops tonight and I don't have to shuffle them around

So... does anyone else have free ranging Jumbo Quail ? or is it just me

I have one pair left from my original 5 (or was it 6?). They have been living in the pullet coop with the new chickies - so today when I opened it up, they went to the door and looked out, and went back in - didn't figure they were interested in going out.

This evening Hubby and I were hanging a gate and I hear a quail crow - so I look and there they are out by the calf pen by us, looking around. I lost track of them, and then went to look for them about an hour later - I heard the male down back by their coop again, so I went and there they were, hanging out by the coop door, when they saw me, they went right on in, like "ok, feed us now".

The calf pen is probably about 100 feet from the coop they live in, and around the barn, so they ranged pretty far for their first time out.

Not sure if they'll go back to the coop every time, but I figure with a current count of 95 quail, and 130 eggs in the bator, if I lose one older pair, they'll have lived a good life. Plus, they know where the endless supply of food is, I doubt they'll not come back without good reason.

Uncle T's Bantam's :

Hi that sound's good .I wish that I could have been there sat but I had to work were there alot of people there .
cool.png

There weren't as many people as I thought there would be, but they were all spread out too. So there could have been more than I thought there was. It was pretty nice, we had fun.

I hope ours is as good....what am I saying?? We need to show up those Indiana folks!! Ours has to be BETTER!!

That's neat about the quail, I'd be afraid of my chickens picking on them! Or the dogs eating them, one or the other. When 2 of my chukars got out a month or whatever ago, Princess was veeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry interested in one of them! Had to tell her to leave it alone a couple of times, it was just too tempting!

Both of my bantam cochins have started laying again, and I've found yet another guinea nest. I don't know if this one is older or newer than the one that was found the other day. There were 6 chicken eggs and 3 guinea eggs in the nest, and it's been about 4 days since we stole the other nest. But the males have been in the pasture keeping watch still, and that's how they do when the hen(s) is laying.

I was freaking out today, I could only find one of my partridge cochin girls!!! I looked everywhere, in the 'garden', in the rafters, in the building, and didn't find her anywhere! Apparently she went to bed early, cause after about the 10th time of looking in the rafters for her, there she was, on the far end of the ladder that they roost on!
ep.gif
So I picked her sister up and put her up there too, she was acting lonely.

I need ideas for this chickenstock guys, I have no idea how to organize something like this!!
