Mojo Chick'n :

Would anyone like to write "sucker" on my forehead?

Ok, so I'm doing chores this morning, and I'm in the barn getting feed for the calves, and thought I saw an egg on top of the hay. I reach up and -- find 8 eggs up there.

Well, I'm sure they are Purdy's eggs, and I know Bubba has been doing his job (every chance he gets

) so I brought them inside and inspected them.

The spare incubator is warming up as I type.

I can't help myself. I've had a break, and now I have these adorable little babies to play with
big_smile.png
and I want more orps to raise up for sale next spring. I wasn't planning to do anymore eggs until like, december or so, but I just can't stop myself.

I had such a good hatch last time, too - 15 out of 16 eggs.... I like it when I have a good hatch.

and... and... and... They're Buff Orps!!! the world needs more buff orps, right?

I'm such a sucker.

Well, your not the only sucker then. I have eggs in the bator and more waiting to go in later. DH tells me its time to stop but I thought I was just getting started

My plan was to have more laying hens by spring so I could sell the eggs for hatching or eating. I only have 1 EE hen and she just became a mother 2 weeks ago. We have 6 chicks in the brooder in my kitchen. I am almost positive there are 2 cockreals and 4 pullets. Two of them already have long tail feathers and are sparring with each other. The other 4 just barely have tail feathers growing and they just stand there and watch the 2 play fight. Sounds like girls to me.

Anyway, good luck with those Orphingtons. I have just 1. I thought she was going to be a Lavender but agter her mold she had some dark feathers pop up here and there and her head and neck is darker like a splash. I'm no pro on deciding what ones color should be called. But I have no roo for her. She is in the coop with an Americak Onagadori. I may put her with my splash bearded silkie just to see what they make. Who knows. Maybe a big fluffy purple chicken.

You definately need more orps - they are the calmest chickens I've ever seen. Hubby likes them because he can walk up them and pet them.

I'm doing my 'fall cleaning' on my flock, so I'll be taking a lot of birds. Too bad we don't have a trailer of some sort, cause I'm sure I'd need one. I'm only keeping about 30 or so of the birds outside, and most of the babies in the house and on the porch. But that still leaves probably over 100 birds that need to go bye-bye, I just need to work on some cages.

Your chicks are so cute!! I love Polish. I've never seen a red crested red, you'll have to post pictures as they feather out.

I have two white crested blue hens, a white crested white hen, and 2 black crevecoeurs which look very similar to the Polish. I would love to have Houdans, but I can't find any around here anywhere!

Anybody here have a clue what kind of pure bantam would be solid buff colored with blue earlobes (may turn white later, he's young) and slate legs?

I got him as a hatching egg from a guy in Lexington who breeds show bantams in his backyard. He has really nice pens set up to divide them by breed and coloring, but I lost the guy's email address. I'm dying to figure out what kind of chick this is so I can get it some mates!! I need more of these friendly little birds. Don't know why I've never tried bantams before...

Ideal's out of houdans right now, but their minimum order is $25, not 25 chicks as with most places. So with shipping, $25 worth of chicks would be about $40.

ETA: My bad, they aren't out of them, https://secuservices.com/ideal/newideal/selectproduct.aspx?qty=1&ID=MH&Product=126 they are only $2.18 each straight run.

ETA again: Now that I actually looked at that page, I believe that one of mine is a mottled houdan. Now I gotta go count toes

I've never heard of that breed before. Hmm.

I googled and it does look similar to those, except mine doesn't have any black on it at all. It's solid buff colored.

If it's not raining I'm going to go take a new picture of it.

I edited my previous post a lot, but after doing a toe-check, it appears that my one is a mottled houdan. So I have:

3 or 4 RCR polish
3 SL polish
1 or 2 BL polish
1 WCB polish
1 mottled houdan

One of mine looks pretty light to be a RCR, so I'm thinking it's another BL, but it does have some black spots on it, so idk. I'll have to wait and see

So exciting that you got one Houdan! I wish you'd have ended up with a pair so I could buy eggs or chicks.

My daughter had a pet Houdan that was very, very beloved but it got sick and died so fast. I think they are a delicate breed.

Here are two pictures of my mystery bantam.

When I went outside to take the pictures he had escaped the chick pen and he was in the pen with the big birds! He was jumping up and down trying to mate the big hens and the big fat marans rooster was beating him up, poor little guy. So now his tail feathers are all ragged and he has bloody peck marks all over one side of his face!
