It's muddy season, ick. I just went out to the birds and got soaking wet and so mud coated that I had to change pants. (And I didn't even fall down the hill and slide on my butt this time!)

Well I have still been loosing the occasional bird with the swollen face gunk. I finally was making a trip to Lexington and took 1 to be diagnosed. Diagnosis was conjunctivitis, sinusitis, amd emancipation???? I just cant figure it out. They are in good space, with plenty of 20% chick starter and water.

are they babies still?

try getting some Oxine and mixing it up (per directions) and put some into a bottle sprayer (like you can get at Walmart in the cosmetics asile) and spray it directly in their faces and under their wings mornign and night for a while. then use the rest to spray down their coop.

kwcowgirlchick: Could it be that it's too damp in their area??

The emancipation is due to them not eating/drinking after they've gotten sick....

Also, is it dusty/dirty in their area or other animals around??

I was told to keep their coop area as dust free as possible... I use pine shreds and DE but my lovely rotten pygmy babies love to hang out in the chicken coop so I'm always cleaning their poop out to keep stuff clean....

So where do I get oxine?
These are actually about 5 months old. Not real dusty but I did clean out the chicken poo that had gotten sort of deep.
I get a more in depth report in the mail. That was a preliminary report via the phone.

Oh, ok. It will have the bacteria/viruses listed on the mailed report, mine always have it. That will tell you a lot more about what you're up against! For the last test they did for my buff brahma hen, they even gave me a list of how the bacteria reacted to a bunch of different antibiotics so I could pick which was the best to use. Unfortunately she died before the report came in the mail.

I've seen the oxine for sale online, but I have no idea where the best place to buy it is...

First State Vet Supply usually has it the cheapest, you can get quart or gallon there - get a quart for starters, til you find out if you like it or not - personally I love the stuff.

it only takes 6 ounces of the oxine per gallon of water - so the price may look high, but it isn't that bad, really.
