Anne, the City of Louisville allows you to have 5 non-crowing birds (Hens) and 1 crowing bird (rooster) or if you don't want a roo, then you can get away with 6 hens. Depending on where you decide to locate yourself, if you are outside of Jefferson County you can probably keep more. There are several semi- rural and rural areas around the area where you can keep livestock and poultry as well.

I thought I would stop by this thread and say Hi. I do not have any chickens yet but I am getting ready for them and doing a lot of reading on the forums. I live in Louisville and happy to find such an active Kentucky thread.

Hello Anny and Welcome to the city. All the Rules on Chickens are going to be the same from the inner city (yah we kinda have an inner city ;P ) to the suburbs as long as you are inside of Jefferson County. You may want to look over the Animal Ordinance of the Metro Government. http://www.louisvilleky.gov/AnimalServices/animal_ordinances/ FrChuckW summed it all up nicely though. If you are wanting more than 6 birds but wanting to stay inside of the Metro area it looks like you will need more than .5 acres.

you getting any goose eggs?

No..and I'm not expecting any soon. She had an encounter with my flock guardian. He's still young enough to have accidents, but I never thought he would bother them. He got hold of Samantha and tore her up a bit. She will be ok I think, but the stress from that incident, I;m sure will slow down any thoughts she may have had of laying.

They are great! The girls aren't laying very regularly right now, but they seem to be a little moody. lol We tried to hatch about 5 of their eggs, but had an incubator malfunction. Guess I'll try again!

Welp... I just confirmed that I have an egg eater. She has got to go. I had three girls in a nest and it looked like all three were chowing down. I recognized one and will have to keep an eye on the others to get a good confirmation on them. They have more than enough food and water and scratch to be doing this. She is an older hen but has to go.

I caught a (non-contiguous) neighbor's cat in my catch em alive trap. Second time in the past year. She is owned by a college student who is a nice girl. It's spring break. I wonder if the cat was left here without food or if the food has just run out. It looks well fed. But then, I may have been feeding it.
I have lost my bantam roo within this last month and have two hens who have been attacked. One of which has a bald spot just behind her comb that is bigger than a quarter. No skin at all. looks nasty. I may have to put her down but she seems to be getting along okay, so I am in a watch and see mode.
All of my other large roos are fine. They seem to be in the rut mode and not paying too much attention to anything else. They do cackle and run and hide when they see a hawk, so I guess they are good for something.
I also saw a raccoon the other night. It seems to be spring time already. Watch out for preditors.

I will be there tomorrow. Lots of baby chicks and baby ducks going with me.

Yeah! I have never been before but have to go tomorrow because I will have soccer games on Saturdays for a while after that. Do people normally get there really early or stagger throughout the day? Is it a big set-up or not? I'm gonna drive about an hour to come so I hope I'm not disappointed.
