This is probably a dumb question but what is dubbing?

Do you see the pic of the splash OEGB cockerel? He is dubbed. His comb, wattles, and earlobes have been cut off. The black OEGB is not dubbed, his comb, wattles, and earlobes are still long.

OEGB have to be dubbed like the splash OEGB cockerel or they are disqualified from showing. The splash OEGB was dubbed when I bought him, I've never done it and would hate to try doing so for the first time on this black cockerel

I'm sorry but doesn't that hurt them? It seems they would judge a bird in it's original form not altered.

I would think it probably does, but they don't usually bleed much, if at all. But the standard for the OEGB says they are supposed to be dubbed, so if I want to show them, that's how they must be.

Wow! Learn something new every day!!! I had no idea that chicken showing involved "altered" animals

So it's only with oegb cocks??? Interesting....

Any type of game I believe: OEG bantam and LF; Modern game bantams and LF; American game bantam and LF. Even though the american games are pea combed they still need to be dubbed.

I wonder if dubbing is as painful as piercings, or circumcision, or tattoos?

I've come home to find roos with torn and bloody combs and wattles from fighting. I found one with a hole torn in his comb and another with a chunk bitten out. It seems that if it is red, it is a target to peck at.

This is why you should use a red light to stop chicks from pecking each other. It hides the blood.

Oh and blood all over the walls and ceiling. It seems that until the wound scabs over really well it tends to bleed and when the roo shakes its head because of the pain, the blood flys.

I checked on my chickens this morning and found the water jug turned over and all leaked out. It seems that the end of the rope lights, that I have in the rafters, fell down and someone tried to fly up and grab the end and ended up knocking the water over. Big wet spot.

Oh well, I put some fresh wood chips down and filled the nests with wood chips as well since I had the bag out. I was wondering why they were so vocal this morning before checking on them.

It seems that one of my hens lays nothing but water. All six eggs in one nest were a mess. Very sticky damp with all manner of detrious stuck to them. She is probably one of the dumpling gang. Poor girl.

A few days ago I had a hen act like she wanted to go broody. Nope, sorry girl, not going to happen. I took her eggs at the cost of a few good pecks and several loud protestations. She was acting like a teenager.

At this time of the year the old hens are looking quite nice, they have all their feathers and are fleshy. Then I have the other younger hens who are somewhat torn up, missing feathers, and looking haggered.

I suspect that the older hens are hassling the younger ones and since they are not laying, the roosters don't bother trying to breed them. The younger hens are laying eggs so the roosters are jumping on them more since the old biddies tend to bite back.

I guess it was about mid-August when I got tired of eating chicken and quit culling for a while. I need to finish up eating the ones I have stored in the freezer and start working on the dumpling gang.

I'm not used to culling hens. I tend to like them more. Hence, the dumpling gang.

My youngest chicks are about the size of a full grown quail. The Dark Cornish, who is the oldest, is now a 14 week old cockeral. Man I really don't like cornish, way to flighty.

The chicks in between are filling out nicely with all the momma hens haveing abandoned their young and staying in the brooding area. I am letting them stay there for now as it keeps the crowding down, but as soon as the dumpling gang is gone, they will get forceablely moved back so the chicks can have free access to the food and drink with out having to dodge random pecks.

Rember to wipe your feet prior to reentering your house. It keeps "reminders" from showing up on your floors.

Well, that's the news from my end of the coop.

On my end of the board it's a wet messy mess around here. It's been raining since sometime this morning and hasn't let up. And it's cold. My inside/outside thermometer says it's 41 outside. Soooooo..................... everybody was out of water today. So here I am outside in the rain cleaning and filling water buckets. I almost just said the heck with the big coop and make them drink out of the water puddles since they seem to like those better. But I didn't. Everybody with a pen that their food I have to access from a door while i'm outside was out of food also. So I'm sitting here with 2 sets of cloths on trying to get warm again. I also have been having a battle with a brooder light. One of my brooder lights in the grow pen keeps blowing bulbs. It's not getting wet, that was the first thing I checked. The grow pen is in the shed and it has a roof of it's own also and there are leaks in the roof of the shed but none by the grow pen or the outlet. No water running down the cord to the light. It wouldn't make it to the light because the cord hangs below the light and the light is under the grow pen roof. First I thought it was just time for the bulb to go so when I changed it I put a 100 watt in for more warmth. It lasted a few hours and then I replaced that one and it lasted maybe an hour. So since the other brooder light was working fine and it had a 75 watt in it, I switched the lights. I put the 75 watt in the one that kept blownig out bulbs and put a 100 in the one that wasn't. The chicks need the warmth more than the duckling does. The duckling still has the 75 watt bulb but it has the light that keeps blowing bulbs. Maybe it will be ok with a lower wattage. They are the ceramic kind since I don't use the plastic ones outside with the higher wattage bulbs. To dangerous. I got 1 egg from a RIR today and 3 from my silkies. I have 19 hens, if that tells you how many slackers I have. It's about time to sell more chickens it looks like. DH and I where talking about selling all the chickens except for the silkies. I have some eggs in the incubator trying to get a couple girls for my blue orphington. I won an auction for some oebg's and none of them are fertile. Probably a good thing. I have sizzles in the hatcher right now. One of my incubators is full and the other is working on it. I have a dozen of my silkie eggs that's going in tonight. Since they just started laying I havne't gotten any fertile eggs till I candled last night. I have 1 showing veins. I wanted to do the victory dance but my feet hurt so it will have to wait till I actually get chicks.

I'm dog sitting my daughters spoiled rotten dog so we have 2 dogs and a cat inside. I have 9 Bob White quail that just refuse to tolerate the cold weather so they are in here.

There are 3 other quail in recovery cages because they keep getting beat up by the others so they are spending their growing time inside till I can process them. Sure wish they would grow up faster. Then I have 3 little EE chicks in a brooder inside still.

My daughters dog seems to think that my couch is hers and when I stretch out on it she thinks i'm suppose to make room for her. NOT!! We have a love seat if the dogs want a softer place to lay. The other dog is a lab and she's pretty big. My daughters dog might weigh 20 pounds. The lab weighs nearly 70. And boy o boy does she have some stinky...............you know whats. I don't know if I can say that here but she will walk over by me and let one go and leave the room. I'm not far behind her either. She and my daughters dog was in the bedroom sleeping with me and they both had this problem. It ran me out of the room.
I know, your probably laughing right now and I would be too if it wasn't happening to me

George the house chicken has been throwing a fit because she can't make me let her out. She has a cage in the living room and I usually let her out when she throws a fit but I have a dog in the house that isn't used to being around chickens so I don't want to let her out.

OMG! She just did it again.

She eats Pedigree food and I have tried others but she has terrible gas anyway. What could cause it and other than inserting a can of air spray, how can I stop it. Can dogs take GasX? She just pooped about 30 min ago so that isn't it.

Well, gotta go leave the room for a while.

Believe it or not, they do make a bean-o type thing for dogs. I'd try getting a GOOD dog food and see if that doesn't help. Something like science diet or similar. I know those are more expensive, but honestly they would last about the same amount of time as the pedigree since you don't feed the dogs as much. Pedigree is a good dog food but sometimes the little stinkers

need something better.

I had that problem with a dog but his deal was that the food was TOO good if that makes any sense.

He was on Eukanuba and I switched him to a lower-quality food, though the name eludes me right now

I got the cheap stuff at the Dollar Store, Everpet is what it's called and no change. Would worms make them have stinky poots? She's been scooting her butt. If I had emiating from me what she does i'd probably scoot my butt too. It must burn. It smells like poop litterally.
