Kentucky people

Oh, btw - I saw one lone call duck in a little pen at the auction friday night - LOL You could hear her all over the parking lot!! She was not happy, I hope they don't go on like that all the time!! LOL

She was pretty though. And the same guy had a pair (or was it a trio) of harlequin ducks - those were VERY pretty.

I need to get some ducks next spring - I'll have hubby talked into it by then

. Or I can just put them in with George and tell him they are REALLY ugly chickens,

Animals are silly. I had my guineas come running up by the house the other day, screeching their heads off. My son had been over by the woods (he has a play area there), and I guess the guineas have decided that is THEIR spot. So they were following him, and making all sorts of racket. I asked him what he did, because they were telling on him...wonder if that is where their nests are??

LOL... Kinda like when I gave the school librarian some frizzles and a naked neck...She told him she curled their feathers with a curling iron and he thought the NN was extremely ugly, but now she's his pet...Follows him everywhere.

I don't know if mine are even laying yet, I have yet to see any evidence of eggs, and they don't sit on them, because they all move as a group all the time.

LOL George and his girls got used to the "free range" thing really fast. This morning when I went out to feed the chickens, they were all waiting lined up by the door, waiting to go out, LOL. Two hens laid eggs this morning in the coop - not sure if they other two will lay in the coop or not, but at least I don't have to look for ALL of the eggs if they don't.

I've seen pics of the NN - they do look ugly, LOL.

But - I'll not say that I'll never have one, because I've said before....

"I just want a few hens to lay eggs"
"I'll never get banties- what are they good for?"
"I don't want cochins, they are so foofy looking."

If I say I don't want it, I'll end up with a whole flock of them, LOL.

when I first got my guineas, I kept them in the cage for like a day. I have 2 hens and 3 roos, and that day there were 2 eggs in the cage. Since then, I have found one more egg, on the floor in the barn. I guess whichever one it was just couldn't hold it anymore. So I know they are laying, just don't know where! I hope I can find the eggs before they hatch. So far both hens are still with the others. But a lot of people I have talked to say when they do find the nests, there has been between 20 and 30 eggs in them!! Don't need that many running around loose!!

Aren't you the one that said you were thinkin about getting rid of all your standards, and just keeping the banties?? Banties are so much fun, I don't care how little they are! I have never seen the standard roos 'dance' around the hens, they just jump on and hold on for dear life! Banties are the cutest things. I let my dutch hen out of her cage this morning so she could stretch her legs, she has been sitting since early this week. I swear, all my little OEGB cockerels were chasing her around the yard!! Maybe I will get different colored chicks sooner than I thought. Right now it seems like all mine are either blue or black. some have red, but they are still blue or black, with red heads!

Yep, that was me, LOL. I'll keep George and a few hens for eggs, but I want to diversify a bit (and get more banties, LOL).

BTW- just went out to check on them, and Oprah (George's main woman) went back in to the coop to lay her egg!! woohoo!! That makes three who will lay in the coop even though they go out - that is the one thing I was most worried about on free ranging, hunting for eggs. I was extra worried about Oprah, because she tends to try to hide her eggs, anyway, and this morning she left the coop and immediately went running into the woods.

Yeah, I know what mean about the roo dance - George does it and the little banties do, but none of the really big roos I've had ever do it, or if they do, it is very seldom - they are more "rough and ready" than "wooing with style".

All my birds have been free range since I got them. Every once in a while I will find an egg on the ground somewhere, like the hen just didn't know where to go. The cochin that we have did that at first, she would set on the nest for a while, get off, and drop it on the ground right outside the door. She finally got it straightened out. She turned out to be the fastest layer. I swear, she would sit the nest for 15 minutes tops before she was done. But my roo is pretty good about showing the girls where the good spots are. He sounded like he was the one laying yesterday, as much as he was cackling! Dad has 2 pullets that are getting ready to start laying, and my roo was trying his best to get them to go in the nests. I have never had any actually lay there eggs somewhere other than the nests. My dad has a game hen that did that, but that is the only one.

Hey Meri, I finally got a good camera!!!

Here is a pic of my prettiest red pyle OEGB

Isn't he pretty?? I am not sure if he is mixed, he sure doesn't look it!! Could have been someone else's egg, other than mom?
