Key West chickens relocating

* and, ironicly (sp?), the majority of locals aren't allowed to adopt any of the strays (due to the same codes) even if they want to. BUT-- I THINK there is supposed to be a particular species that IS native to the Keys, and the ferals are a threat to them by breeding extinction, I imagine.

I wish we had roaming chickens here, it'd be kind of cool. We go to a mexican restaurant on the river bc they have ducks that live there and if you sit on the patio you can feed them. I don't like their food, but I go for the ducks!

that would be me, too. . . Running joke in my family if we go someplace and get separated is they'll find me whereever the critter's are kept-- even if it's only a fish tank!

Thank you for the link to the rescue. In the spring, I think I will have a few shipped up to me. I feel better knowing that they are boeing adopted and not killed. The Chicken Store is now closed. I believe the owner wanted to relocate, but for one reason or another couldn't. I loved that store and always bought at least $100. worth of chicken things there every time we went to Key West. I am bumping up this post because I just got back from Key West and there are chickens in need of adoption right now. There are plenty of Gypsy roosters, beautiful red colors and big combs and little bantum size(and colored) hens, some with chicks. I have to wait until June until the weather warms up and then I am getting 4 hens and a rooster. There are LOTS of roosters(Too bad, I think some go for meat) I wish I could take more. I urge ANYONE who has some room and doesn't mind paying the shipping, to adopt some Key West chickens. If you have ever been to Key West and seen them running around there, you know exactly why I am pleading with you to save them. If anything, it's the novelty of owning what may be a dying breed. Merry

According to the article:
But Verge has this answer for tourists upset about the potential loss of the birds: "Give me your address, and I'll ship you some."
I was in Key West last month (very briefly) with my family and we thought the chickens were pretty neat wondering around, we saw maybe a dozen in the 2 hours we were on land. I suppose 2000/3000 could be a nuisance!
