In Italy and France, eating is a very important activity. Food matters. You don't just eat to eat, you eat for the enjoyment of the food. Not to pig out on it but to savor each bite. They pay attention to the food, to the preparation, to the ingredients. The point is that it's not a mindless habit. And obesity is far less common in those countries, even though they eat well: high fat, high carb, high wine... They do tend to walk a lot more. But formal exercise is less common. So yeah.
Personally, I remember when the new food pyramid came out back in the 70s, that called for a lot more grains and less protein, my mom complaining about it and explaining to me: "that's why poor people are fat, because they don't get enough meat in their diets."
