Chicks and very young children need to be closely supervised during handling to avoid fragile chicks being squeezed and injured and stressed from constantly being dragged out of the brooder to be "played with".

However, baby chicks can stand to be gently held under supervision, and both the children and chicks can benefit.

I just try and be specific with our "rules" when holding the chicks. I say, "Hold them close to your chest." And "You have to sit down." I try and teach them to put their hands like a cup, so the chick doesn't flop out of their hands onto the ground. Once the chicks get older and more sturdy, I'm a little more flexible. And I always make sure they wash their hands afterward!
