I have my kids washing constantly, before and after holding the chicks. Is this overkill? Do we have to worry about the birds themselves or just the poop? My poor kids (6 kids, 12 and under) think I'm crazy, am I? And if I am I might just not tell them

I don't think you're crazy.

MAYBE a little too much washing but hey, what you think is safest is what matters. We don't wash our hands before handling the chicks but we do afterwards or use sanitizing gel.

It is the poo you must worry about but washing after holding them is not a bad idea. Sometimes they have poo on their feet and such.

We wash our hands before holding our chicks so they don't get sick, we do that less as they get older.

We wash our hands after holding the chicks so we don't get sick and we always do that.

I figure it's not worth anyone (kid or chick) getting sick when it's so easy to make sure we don't.
