Kiki's found horse eggs—experiment Round 2

I, too, have hatch envy. I'm staring daggers at my poor hens, hoping to see one start clucking and camping out in the nest box. My rooster is feeling it too. Today I saw him sitting in front of a nest box with several eggs in it making clucking sounds and trying to call the hens back in. He may love broody hens even more than I do.

So you get to hatch your own eggs, now I have something else to envy.

All of my past hatches have been my "own" eggs, but this year I'm going to go for some shipped eggs. I love my rooster and he is great in every aspect except that his genetics are flawed. As long as he breeds with an unrelated hen, his offspring are OK -- although even there I get about 10% with some type birth defect. But the offspring of a Duke to daughter mix is bad news. So, I need some new blood in the flock. I think I'm going to order from Pappa's poultry out of Redding. He's got some nice looking orpingtons and marans.

yes, I had gotten some pullets, when i was keeping an illegal roo for the same reason.
I'm glad a can keep a legal roo. Many of my neighbors have them as well, and I love hearing different crows off in the distance.

My dilemma is going to be if I hatch out a gorgeous orpington or maran too. I'm not ready to let Duke go, for all his bad genes.
