I've read Silent Spring, sorry you didn't understand that.

I don't know who is right or wrong in this discussion but if this was a debate you would be the looser, hands down. So you read it. That doesn't make it true. Q9 has already stated that a onetime supporter he names found flaws in the source material. Sounds to me like he understood Silent Spring better than you or at least didn't take it at face value.

Surely if you were really passionate about the subject that you would not be lazy and would post your research. Lazy usually = no research done.

Gee whiz, you're like arguing with my cousins!

I guess your cousins must be like Q9 and respond with supporting documentation. I have to conclude that you do not have lazy cousins.

Thanks Q9 for responding with earlier with the sources of your side when asked.

A friend of mine did this with 30 lb fishing line and he said the hawks moved on to the next chicken farm. But you need to tie flags to the lines so the hawk can see it otherwise they'll end up sliced and diced. You probably wouldn't mind that seeing that they are after your chickens but raptors do play a vital role... By flags I mean just get a roll of the yellow or pink warning tape, cut it into 2 ft strips and tie it on the string.

Maybe we should stick to the topic at hand so the thread doesn't get locked.

We have hawks here, but haven't had a problem so far with them eating my chickens. We are in a very rural area, though, so I think there's plenty of wildlife for them to eat. Lots of prairie land here, so it's probably easier for them than trying to get my birds who have lots of cover around the building site. Just had a bald eagle sitting in a tree at the end of our yard. That was pretty cool! Glad my chickens are locked up, though.

I read that and I read Q9's (notice I said Q9's since he did not give any links to reliable studies) post. I'm not going to eat any DDT in the near future and it appears that DDT is still linked to eggshell thinning.

As far as Rachel Carson, it looks like many of her critics are linked to the pesticide companies, imagine that.

In late summer when it seemed that all the hawks were migrating over my house... I hung helium mylar balloons around my garden and area the birds were in and nobody even stopped on the tops of the tall game fences to peek at the buffet of birds I had anymore. I guess the bouncing, colorful, unpredictably moving balloons were unnerving to the hawks. No birds were lost.
