kill shelters

That was what I was gonna say. I work at a vet clinic and I think more information should be out on the disease etc.. on pets and how much they cost even though it varys it is still expensive. We do see alot of parvo and worm infestions etc.. in puppys around here and alot of FIV/ Feline Leukemia, along with other cases, but people need to be educated on these things. If you conisder getting an animal consult with a vet that you trust. They can point you to the right shelter(or breeder), the right care, and things you need to look at when purchasing an animal. And remeber animals are expensive no matter where they come from. Oh and spay and neuter please. That in itself can save you money. Csections are expensive. A male dog running around chasing females in heat that gets in dog fights or hit by cars are just as expensive. We see this at the clinic also. Sorry if this sounds like preaching I dont mean to, I just try to educate because at one time I was not educated at owning a pet.

and people wonder why no one ever gets dogs from shelters...its cheaper and easier to just look in the paper or something...not to mention that you sometimes wont be alowd to adopt a dog out if you dont qualify for their demands...our shelter charges $100 for a dog...its almost like they dont want you to take a dog or a cat home...

i volunteer at our shelter as often as i can...alot of the animals are scared, acting strange, they show no emotion at all, or some look half dead

and honestly i would never buy a dog from a shelter...not because i want them to die but because it might not be safe for me or my other animals...no one really knows the background of the animal and the animal could have been abused and it could turn on you or kill your other animals...abused animals are sometimes unpredictable...i would only get a puppy from the shelter...maybe

but this is just my opinion and i dont really think kill shelters should be alowd...but i wont be one to go get an animal from a shelter...kudos to those who do though...and good luck with them!

Chickens are just so much easier right! LOL

That's what frustrates me. The animals need homes and if you don't meet their standards, the animals die because they wouldn't let you take them. If they cared, they would care enough to find them a home, not be money hungry executioners.

In all honesty though, those shelters that are asking the big bucks usually temperment test thier animals and have all their shots, most have even already been spayed and nuetered. While I do not support $500 "adoption" fees from the "pound" there is a huge difference between a dog in shelter A for adoption for $25 that was brought in by its prior owner and has not been checked out or handled, and dog in shelter B who was either brought in by prior owner or picked up off the streets and has now had everything done to it and you know it's a safe dog. We do have shelters around here that ask for $100-$250 for their dogs but these dogs are all done medically (having been tested for heartworm, wormed, all shots, and fixed) and have been temperment tested with kids/babies, other animals, checked for gaurding or agression issues, etc.
To me the latter dog is worth more than $25 but not $400-$600.... That is robbery.

That is true, for sure people need to know what they're getting into before buying a pet. I always spay/neuter and vaccinate myself. I insisted on the FIV vaccine, a lot of vets seemed to try to sway me from this, saying that its only 80% effective. I say 80% is better than nothing!!

However, it sure doesn't cost $500 at the vet to do all this. Its well under $100 for a spay or neuter, and a couple hundred, not even, to do all the vaccines and worming in one shot. I'd rather spend little on the animal, and pay for the vet costs myself. The SPCA doesn't even cover all the necessary vaccines. I end up taking my SPCA cats to the vet anyway to get them the vaccines the SPCA missed, as well as to test for FIV. They only do the bare bones basic vaccines. And their flea and worming consists of a single dosage of Advantage.

But I do understand the dilemma the shelters are under. They can't trust that responsible pet owners WILL take them to the vet to get all the necessaries. Its just a never ending evil cycle! Responsible pet owners feel cheated and slighted by shelters. But I'll bet shelters do a decent job of keeping away bad pet owners. However, bad pet owners can just go to irresponsible back yard breeders, or pet stores, and GOOD pet owners will go that rout too out of frustration at the shelters. There doesn't seem to be an all purpose solution out there.

2 of my dogs were adopted, and one was a true rescue - he had an imbedded collar all the way around his neck (has the scar where you can actually see the individual links from the chain), went to the humane society and got adopted out. That guy kept him locked in a room and didn't let him out at all! Great way to help out the dog right! That guy got arrested for unrelated issues and the cops left the dog there! I wound up with him, and he has turned around 110% - but it took A LOT of work and patience. So, the "system" didn't work for our Ted.

Also know some very nice people who live in the country, but in a trailer. They adopted a nonsense, and when he passed away, they went in to adopt another small dog. They weren't allowed to adopt because they lived in a trailer and not a house! They had vet references and everything... Once again the "system" worked against the animal who would've gotten a great home.

You have to wonder what they are really doing. Common sense would tell you it's not a bad home simply because it isn't a "house"!

I totally agree with adopting, but it can be harder than just going in and picking out a new family member

Dogs are not my favorite subject, but I have to put my two cents worth in,..My SIL "runs" a rescue shelter. She basically takes in unwanted dogs and then adopts them out through another outfit up north. They charge ridiculous adoption fees due to transporting the animals and just for whatever other reasons they can think of. My SIL or her partner in crime neither has no training or qualifications to be working with these dogs. They are not behaviour experts or have any medical training. They take ANY dog of the street and they will find it a home. They have taken in dogs that are aggressive and needed in my opinion put down, but they will ship them up north somewhere and adopt them out. I find the whole operation a joke. I met the woman she deals with that lives up north (not sure where) and her take is all of us poor people in WV have no idea or no monetary means to take care of our animals so she does what she can by taking them in and finding them proper homes.

WHAT? Is she kidding??? The real kicker is besides that is they do not even have them spade or neutered or vet checked,...how is that helping???? Oh and my poor SIL just adopted two huskies,..to breed them and to make money. She now has seven new puppies. Its all such a shame. So beware who you deal with guys.

Up, are we related?! You have GOT to be talking about my aunt! She " rescues " whatever sounds fun and then doesn't look at them again. She throws the care on her kids and sits in the house all day getting fatter and wasting her life away. At least your SIL breeds purebreds. My aunt let's her mutts breed cause puppies are fun.

Our shelter charges $50 for a cat and $75 for a dog and this includes spay or neuter, first shots and a free vet visit. Doesn't seem too bad to me!!
