If that's the AV shelter that is where I got my sweet Dotty at. She's a wonderful girl.

That's the one!!! We got both kitties there in October.

Yep it's a great deal. Our guess was that she was old enough to have had a litter of pups. At that size it would have cost at least $60 just to spay her. The people were very nice. They saw that we were excited to get a dog and they were happy to adopt her out to us. She caught our eye when we pulled up. There was a guy and his son walking her around on a leash and we thought "bummer, she's cute and they are gonna take her". So we went through half the shelter and she was back in the kennel. We asked to see her and when she came out it was nuthin but love. She gently put her paws on my daughters shoulders, rested her chin on her, and wagged her tail. My daughter about cried she was so happy. The worst part was waiting the 2 or 3 days till she was spayed and allowed to come home with us. The lady at the shelter said that week was a record adoption week. I bet they adopt out many more animals than the rescues that make it next to impossible to adopt from.

No, but that $500 (or whatever) includes a portion of the dogfood bill, the electric and water bill for the bldg, possibly rent or mortgage or similar depending on the situation, a pittance towards the salaries of those who work there, etc etc. So you have to consider overhead. Some shelters have the benefit of large outside sources of money or extremely beneficient donors, but, not many.

When I adopt an animal -- and *all* my cats have been adopted from shelters or rescues -- I don't see it as paying a retail price for the animal, I see it as paying to support *that organization* and they happen to be throwing a cat in as an gift of appreciation, sort of thing. Sure I could get a cat cheaper somewhere else but I support the general purpose of most shelters, without whom, a whole buncha animals would be loose on the streets or in terrible conditions.

Yes, I'm aware of what happens to homeless animals who don't end up in shelters.
No, I do not look at animals as retail, that's just insulting, and my cats come from shelters too.
If you look at the BC SPCA website the price for dogs goes up by breed. This is directly taken from their website.

Dogs: $295

Dogs - Toy Breeds: $395

Dogs - Purebred (documented by appropriate paperwork): $395

Puppies (under 6 months): $375

Puppies (under 6 months - Toy Breeds): $475

Puppies (under 6 months - Purebred, documented by appropriate paperwork): $475

A shelter who raises the price like that for papered purebreds sure isn't just thinking about overhead costs, now are they?? If they really cared about the welfare of the animals they would charge the same price for purebreds as they would for mutts. Charging more for purebreds at a shelter screams that they are NOT just looking out for those poor, homeless dogs.

Take a look at their website and see their "employment opportunities" page. Yes, it sure looks like the SPCA is struggling to pay their rent and hydro bill.
