Livestock is meat.
Pets are meat.

OK I did not feel the need to read all 13 pages, but in response to the OP, since the ban on horse slaughter in the US was put into effect the treatment of horses has become steadily worse. Horses, Cows, Elk, Deer, Bear, Sheep, Goats.... dare I say... Chickens.... theyre all meat. You don't have to eat it, I will never eat it, but that wont change the fact that horses are meat and if they can go to slaughter houses instead of starving to death neglected in a pasture somewhere then I say go for it.

I have to say, that having Indian friends has kinda made me think about meat eating in general, and where I personally stand on it.

I understand that I draw the line at certain animals. I could not bring myself to eat cat, dog, insects, horse or monkey unless I was starving. However, I'm also self aware enough, and smart enough to realize that since I do eat meat, the line is completely arbitrary. What revolts me, or gives me the willies is cultural, just as no eating meat is to some of my Indian friends, or no pork for my Muslim or Jewish friends. Actually for me, the objections are more arbitrary, because I don't have a religious imperative not to eat certain foods.

I think overall, sending horses to slaughter for meat is more humane then letting them die of neglect or starvation. Or transporting them hundreds of miles for slaughter.

I think the EWWWW factor is completely cultural. Most northern Europeans do not eat rodents, insects or horses; and that is where the predominate cultural heritage of the US lies. Americans are squeamish about a lot of foods that are common in other countries.

I would intentionally eat any animal, except for parrots, and most little wild birds. Heck if I was hungry and there was a plate of fried monkey thighs, I would eat it. I don't care to place horse over any other animal, but I have never bonded with a horse enough to know about them. I know that pigs can be really good pets, but we eat pork. (MOST OF US) I do. I wouldn't be the person who slaughtered the horse, but I don't slaughter animals for food. The people who do that can do the killing I will do the cooking and the preparing, and of COURSE the eating.

To keep it in the equine tradition I would serve it with rolled oats, cobb and garnished with alfalfa. A pony pie for dessert.

It could be called the fancy French word for horse- "cheval." Doesn't that sound like a meat that would be lightly seared and moist, garnished with some parsley and a side of braised asparagus or the like? It's all in the presentation.

Sure. Feed cats and doggs to the hungry people. Whatever. I don't want to see it in the supermarket. And the outrage in this country if we started to eat dogs and cats would be outrageous. I feel the same about horses.

Cause you view horses as nothing more than pets.

EXACTALLY you hit the target! Most people view everything as a pet, what if you had pet cows? Would you still eat beef? Pet pigs, Bacon? People are starving everyday and need food to eat, animals are put down everyday in shelters. I dont see what would be wrong with them to feed the hungry.
