I have to say, that having Indian friends has kinda made me think about meat eating in general, and where I personally stand on it.
I understand that I draw the line at certain animals. I could not bring myself to eat cat, dog, insects, horse or monkey unless I was starving. However, I'm also self aware enough, and smart enough to realize that since I do eat meat, the line is completely arbitrary. What revolts me, or gives me the willies is cultural, just as no eating meat is to some of my Indian friends, or no pork for my Muslim or Jewish friends. Actually for me, the objections are more arbitrary, because I don't have a religious imperative not to eat certain foods.
I think overall, sending horses to slaughter for meat is more humane then letting them die of neglect or starvation. Or transporting them hundreds of miles for slaughter.
I think the EWWWW factor is completely cultural. Most northern Europeans do not eat rodents, insects or horses; and that is where the predominate cultural heritage of the US lies. Americans are squeamish about a lot of foods that are common in other countries.
