I don't get how after all the information given... people are still talking about humans eating horses as a viable option?
There will never be FDA or USDA approval of this meat for human consumption. At least the people dealing in food safety are capable of understanding the fact that it isen't safe.
The dogs that might be eating this meat in their kibble, will only be the ones being fed sub-par brands loaded with corn and other fillers anyway. Since now many more responsible pet owners are feeding better brands without the fillers, ones that use approved meat fully listed in the ingredients label, it's not going to be an issue for them either.
I think other countries do not buy these animal carcasses and wait for them to be shipped to their country loosing freshness, then toss them on the table at an expensive restaurant... they probably have their own herds for a local, fresh source.
So... no matter which country the killing takes place in, the bodies of these horses will only be feeding the dogs of other countries anyway. And those owners that don't care what their dog consumes. Like pesticides
Where it ends up is not the important part of this argument anyway. The way these horses are dealt with before, and during the slaughter process IS the important part. Go ahead and shoot your unwanted horse yourself, then feeeze the meat and feed it to your dogs. That is OK by me.
Send it to a commercial slaughter house, with a long, scary, packed trailer ride (no matter which country or state its headed to)... feeling the panic of all the other horses around it... which horses feed off of each others fear, by the way, for those who didn't know.
So it can smell, see, hear the death of other horses, long before it becomes its turn. That is not OK. And it is not justified by anything.
Theres a good deal thats not humane about that slaughter process. Considering the sensitivity of the senses, and the strength of the fight or flight response of a horse. It does not compare to a cow, or a pig, or a sheep. I don't believe that anyone saying otherwise has had much experience with horses.
It's time people take personal responsibilty for their animals... ITS ENTIRE LIFE! That includes giving it a kindly end if, you can no longer feed it, can not re-home it, it is a danger, it is ill. The owner of that animal is responsible for the animals end, just as they were responsible for its beginning.
If they can't find it in themselves to make it happen in a humane manner.... I hope they are treated better when their time comes.

I'll respectfully disagree with this comment. Sheep are just as finely attuned to the fear response of a herd and have an incredibly strong fight or flight ....more so, in fact, than any domestic horse I've seen.
When it all comes down to the bottom of the bottom, any animal sent to a slaughter house has pretty much a fear and anxiety response to the experience...if you've ever taken a group of animals in, you can see this very plainly.
I don't know that I could send my own horse to slaughter when he became too old, particularly if I were bonded to him...but the horses I've seen that are neglected, unwanted, etc? Yes, I think that, despite the whole fear factor, blah, blah, blah...I'd much rather see them meet a relatively quick end and become a useful source of nutrition for another creature than suffer a long and slow life of neglect and loneliness in some field or barren little pen filled with mud and muck.
Death is not the worse thing I've seen that can happen to an animal...or a human. Death is the absence of endless pain, hunger, misery~I'd choose that over the alternative any day.
What is the difference if you kill a cow for meat, a rabbit or any other animal if you intent to eat it or give it to someone who needs it?
Ever watch Bizarre foods there is when you learn stuff I seen where they raise guinea pigs for food and what about donkey I have had squirrel and rabbit which I never in my wild dreams would think I would eat. how about frog legs does this seem odd. I find since I live out here my ideas have changed I once thought how cute but now I think what would you taste like (on the grill or smoked) I do not not have the metality of my husband YET where most animals are a food source but I still will try to get my animals well where he would just kill them and replace them.
I find nothing wrong with the selling of horse meat, croc meat goat meat sheep meat or anything else out there, the Gods put animal on earth so we may eat them and my family eats them plenty. Why would it be wrong to kill a horse for meat, is it wrong to kill a cow or a pig, we don't raise dogs or cats for meat but other countries do, do you think this is wrong to to kill a dog or cat for food or do you think if you have to be starving to do such act. No I don't kill my dogs or cats but I do wonder what they may taste like.
I don't say anyone is wrong on killing any animal as lone as it is done humanely and it is for food or to give to someone for food OR from disease, I deer hunt and my husband deer hunt and I was against this but in learning they need to be thinned out or theytarve to death or diseaese will come in it is better to kill them, I thought of shuipping them to anoter place but in the end you can ont put them in so many places and it will get over populated and then what you are in the same place.
Has anyone heard of the plight of the wild mustangs I hear people adopting them but I also heard of them going to slaughter houses I can't say it is ashame to think such a magnifacent animal to go to a slaughter house but just like the deer if there is to many and not enough poeple or any rescues to get them what can you do. I think that if they were to waive the adoption fee it would be better but then again if they can't afford the adoption fee maybe they can't afford the horse I don't know A horse I find is not the cost of getting it it is feeding it and taking care of it that I can't afford.
??? I don't know I am for selling horse meat BUT TO THE USA PEOPLE
A long time ago when I was in the single digits I had horse meat the animal people got up and arms and said it was unhumane and the horse meat was taking off the market I recall on TV a horse having a cleave through the neck oh not a real one like you see a arrow threw some one it is fake. I had it and it tasted like a cross between deer and beef very good.
Funny you say that the last Mustang auction held by the BLM the horses that sold (only2) of about 20 sold for the minimum bid of 125.00 the rest were walked out and they were young mares.
