killing mice and protecting the girls

Victor brand works best and last longest. Bait with peanut butter.

I agree
If it's not a Victor, it's junk.

If you put them against a wall or near a hole, you don't even need to bait them.

I've had the best luck in the house and in the feed room with non victor traps. The victor traps I've tried aren't the wood type but some plastic ones that never caught a single mouse and a battery powered one that worked once and never worked again. I have these gray traps called "the better mousetrap" and they've caught more mice than any other I've ever tried.

what about bait boxes with bait? Chickens can not get in and mice can not drag out the bait. My concern is the chickens eat the dead mice with poison.....

You definitely need a snap trap or some sort of kill trap... poisons are not good because chickens and even ducks will eat mice and if its poisoned then your chicken will become poisoned too... I usually use choclate chips for bait

Plus, the mice can eat the bait, crawl off and die someplace you can't get to the body. Stinky! And any outdoor critter might eat a poisoned mouse. Stray cat, dog, even a crow. Poisons are just not cool.

metal trash can will protect feed storage and if you can find a deterrant that chickens won't eat, that may help like peppermint or moth balls. I don't know if a cat would be smart if there are chicks around, they might prove to be kitty nuggets

Use traps inside boxes or wire cages
I realize this is an old thread but the advice is pertinent. I have tried many different things for rats not mice. I had a coop that was infested. When I renovated it I found several rat nests and dozens of rats of all sizes poured out. Our barn is behind the coops and I had seen some evidence of rats being in the barn. I also noticed tunnels around the coops and barn which I think the rats made. I bought some rat bait stations and some bait. The rats didn't care for the bait that came with the bait stations so I bought some different bait. They liked the new bait. As long as you are responsible poison can be used without harm. I put the bait stations with the bait into pet carriers so that only the rats could get to it and put the pet carriers up on shelves so again, nothing but the rats could get to it. The bait boxes have a little window above the bait so it can be checked often. The bait boxes also have a patrician down the middle inside the box that the rats have to go around to get to the bait so the bait stays in the bait stations. I didn't find any dead rats and I think it's because they went into their tunnels and died.
