Hello,I’ve got a male king quail about a month ago and he’s been fine until today because, in the morning I went to clean his water bowl out and check on him and I noticed that one of his eyes where shut or it looked like it, but when I took his house out of his cage one of his eyes where closed and the other opened! I picked him up and checked out what happened, his eye look like It was gone, but I later found out it wasn’t. There was some whitish stuff in its eye and when I took a closer look at it, fell out!!! I picked It up out and I was like slimy and stuff his eye was fine and stuff But, I don’t know what is was. Then I checked his eye again and I could see it a little I think it’s swollen or something but I can provide pictures, and then I checked his head and there was tiny flap of skin that was open and I could see a little inside of it and I was bloody but not like the bleeding out of the wound but it was bad I don’t know if he hit his head on something and hurt it or, a blood vessel popped or something I don’t know and I saw some black lines on the back his body I don’t know what they are but if someone could help I would be grateful
I’m only a kid by this is my mother’s account she made it for me and sorry about grammar.

Hi @Modxfirefox :frow Welcome To BYC

I don't know much about Quail, so hopefully someone like @007Sean or @Texas Kiki can help you more.

You mention there was slimy stuff in his eye, would it be fair to say it could have been pus?
Is he housed with any other Quail?
The head injury I can't see very well, can you get some more photos of that?

It looks like he has new feather growth (pin feathers) coming in on his back - is that the black lines you are talking about? He may have been picked at, but I see more feathers coming in.

We are glad you're here! I hope your quail gets better, does he have a name?

Welcome to BYC!
Can you post a few pictures of his cage?
How many roommates does he live with?

I can't see the eye injury, can you get better pics? Seeing that it's a male, do you have any other pen/cage mates in with him? The feathers missing on his back look like that may be occurring from over crowding....if it were female I'd say it was from over breeding.

His name is Hermès and the eye is better than yesterday and if you look right on the middle of the head you can kinda see the injury.

He may have injured the eye somehow when he injured his head. I'm sure Kiki and Sean will chime back in, if the eye is watery, then I would flush it with saline a couple of times a day. You can also put some eye ointment in it or use Vetericyn eye gel.
If the wound on the head is scabbed over, I would keep watch on it, you can put a little plain triple antibiotic ointment on it if you wish.

Thank you! The injury is not scabbed yet its kinda slimy by the injury but no blood coming out.

Oh...if the injury is slimy, then you need to clean it. Since it's on the head, I would clean it with saline, generously flush all the slime out, give it a little scrub with a rough wash cloth if you need to until you see normal looking skin. Dry, then apply some triple antibiotic ointment.
Do you have someone that can help hold him while you do that? It's so much easier if you have a helper.
