Kitchen arrangement *Post a picture!

My kitchen is small/narrow.
On one side is my fridge, sink with two cabinets that we don't use (my cat uses it as his den), trashcan, backdoor.

On the other side is my stove, above that is a set of two cabinets that hold:
Oil sprays, various steak sauces, EVOO, popcorn, and a bowl of my stuff.

Going along, is the counter, with a toaster, coffee maker, coffee canister, creamer canister, microwave, dish rack on it.
Three drawers under the counter, going from the stove hold:
1.) Cooking utensils, measuring spoons/cups, 2.) Knives and knife sharpener, 3.) Utensils for eating/several pairs of chopsticks.
Three drawers under cabinet #1 hold:
A.) Foil, wax paper, baggies, freezer baggies.
B.)Dish rags/towels.
C.)Kitchen appliances warranty papers.

Two cabinets alongside the drawers hold:
1.)Various bowls/mixing bowls, lids.
2.)Cookie racks, cooking pans, small pots/lids.

A row of cabinets above the counter hold:
1.) Nearest the stove, the seasoning cabinet, with teas, coffee filters, my GD's snacks/quick lunches.
2.)Plates/bowls/cups/glasses - all glass on one side, all plastic on the other side.

Space above these cabinets hold various boxes of cold cereal that my oldest daughter likes to buy for the family.

Straight through the kitchen is my Pantry, having three shelves holding:
1.) Everything in storage.
2.)Boxed foodstuff.
3.)Canned foodstuff.

In the Pantry, also is a washer with part of the second shelf holding laundry soap, cat litter/food.

Personally, I want cabinets that you can see whatever is inside them.
I can't stand to go into anyone else's kitchen and having to guess where anything is, having to open several just to find a cup for tea.

When our cabinets were being installed (they had two of them up), I found that I couldn't even reach the second shelf. Luckily, I was able to have them repositioned about 6in. lower. I can't even imagine how I would have been able to use the upper cupboards if they had put them as high up as they started to.

Anyone want to post a picture of their kitchen? I will try to get one of mine and post it later today.

This is my dining room and part of the kitchen. I need to get a better one.

We have pictures posted on our Page here at BYC if anyone wants to look. It is my dream kitchen and its HUGE. I have a separate walk in pantry where all the appliance are including my pots and pans on a rack for easy access. All my spices are on open shelves in the pantry along with sauces, rice, flour etc. I have one very large cabinet in the corner that is my baking center - everything baking wise goes in there except the flour and white sugar. I have another cabinet that is all about canning. I have all my cheese making stuff in one place. Oils, vinegars and other cooking fluids in the cabinet next to the stove. All my cabinets have glass windows and you can see what is in there. May not be good for some but we love it.

Forgot to mention, we have a awesome view out the window when I'm at the stove and see beautiful Mt. Shasta. From the sink I see Mt. Lassen and all the mountain ranges that surround our house. We are very grateful to have just a wonderful place. Let me know what you think.

My kitchen is mine. I don't share well at all. It gets ugly when someone comes in and moves stuff around. Everything is arranged so that I can just grab and go. I find it interesting how many of the ladies here feel exactly the same way!

I will tell you, in all honesty, that when my in-laws moved in with us for a year I just about needed professional help over my MIL's use of my kitchen. Never in my life have a soaked a cast iron skillet in soapy water. Never have I heated the electric skillet up to the point that when sprayed with Pam it smoked the room (I gifted the skillet to her). I began hiding stuff in the back of cupboards so that she wouldn't find it and ruin it because I couldn't afford to replace it! She used to use my hand sharpened knives to open mail and cut up cardboard. These are crimes that will get a person drawn and quartered in my kitchen! I still feel anxiety when I think about it! Thank God she was afraid to use my kitchen aid mixer!

OMG, that was like a flashback...I feel nauseous. I have this insane fear that she's in my kitchen right now cooking Wheaties meat loaf with pimentos. Even the dogs ran from that one...

You poor thing a whole year of that torture! When my mom comes to my house she has learned to put her feet up, read a book and stay the heck out of the kitchen! She is proud that I'm a way better cook then her and lets "her daughter who a gourmet cook" do the cooking and clean up. She is allowed to set the table. I just remember I made her a plaque that she has in her kitchen that says "You know dinner is ready when the smoke alarm goes off"

It's true!

I subscribe to the theory that good cooks skip a generation. My grandmother was an awesome cook, my mother, not worth squat. Me, my brothers, my cousin, all awesome cooks. My oldest daughter is a nightmare in the kitchen, and I KNOW she was taught better! I think if your mom is a great cook you lose motivation to learn, but if she serves lumpy pancakes and thinks spam is a staple, you learn to cook out of wanting to not die of hunger.

And as long as we are on the subject- last week I made Gordon Ramsey's shephards pie- girls, it is to DIE for!!!! You gotta go try it.

My previous MIL had a theory that if it costs more than $2.00 it was too expensive. So if she cooked, you got day old bread, canned shrimp, cheap ground beef. All burned together, so seriously, it didn't matter. UUUGGGHHH- and all her food came flavored with mothballs, seeing as she stored them in the same pantry as the boxed food. Great, now I am nauseous and am having flashbacks.
