The true name is budgerigar parakeets, but that's a mouthful so people call them generally budgies, or parakeets. To me they are interchangeable, but when you use the term budgie people know exactly what species you are talking about. There are multiple types of parakeets, so in the bird world it's a general term that refers to a diverse group of birds with individual names, but all are considered parakeets.

English budgies are bigger and more fancy. They look like they have bigger heads. American budgies are lighter, and more active. I have never seen an English budgie in person, only in pictures.

My grandpa kept a parakeet, so I keep them because their chatter reminds me of him. I've had tame ones, I've bred them and had really tame one. I currently have 4 that aren't tamed. They can be noisy at times, but I enjoy them.

Thank you! This is very helpful and I’ve learned a lot haha I thought they called them American Parakeets and English Budgies to differentiate but you are right that there are lots of types of parakeets so it does make more sense to call them all budgies haha

That makes sense. I feel like a more active bird would be more fun but I’ve heard the English ones are tamer or more calm and easier to tame? But I think they’re pretty rare so idk.

I really want a lineolated parakeet (linnie) one day or a bourkes, both are supposed to be awesome and possibly better but idk haha maybe one day!

I want a lot of different animals and many breeds/varieties even within the same species. :lau

And aww that’s very sweet. :love they definitely can get noisy, you are right about that, but their chatter is so nice. :)

Although I’m not sure if I could stand it all day every day aha I do like my quiet sometimes. :lau

But it is nice and it’s also pretty.

I’ve been debating between getting a pair or even just one and having a super tame, friendly one, or whether to get like a flock, like 4-6 or so, and just mostly leave them alone, give them lots of toys/stuff to do and a flight cage and just watch them. Because both ways of keeping them are so different. Like on the one hand, it can be really fun to teach them tricks and/or have them hang out with you, but then on the other hand it is really neat to watch them interact with each other and play and just listen to their chatter and singing haha

I think what I would really love to do is have an aviary one day with a bunch of parakeets and maybe some cockatiels too. I think that would be really fun to watch/hang out with them in an aviary setting and a bit more natural. Bet it’d be fun to watch them fly all over haha maybe some quail for the bottom. Thinking maybe an outdoor aviary or indoor/outdoor with maybe a tunnel or window or door or something connecting to an inside aviary or at least an inside cage. I think that would be cool.

That said, I also love the bigger parrots and want one eventually. I love green cheeked conures or maybe an Amazon or grey or something sometime haha

Everybody always says the larger parrots are really loud but I’ve heard some say that they don’t mind it as much or like don’t find their parrot annoying because while it’s louder volume wise, they don’t do it as often? Whereas parakeets while quieter volume wise constantly chatter all day? So I guess it’s what you prefer. Idk. I think I could handle or even like both but I did think it was a good point and that I might almost prefer a bigger one cause they’re at least quiet most of the time aha

Anyway, sorry for rambling as well as totally hijacking your thread.

Awww sounds like he’ll do great then!! I’m glad he seems to be doing better. :) hope he does well hunting!!

I like Labs but I think they are way too common and overbred these days and I will say this, I don’t like most Labs. A lot of them, especially the field bred ones, are insane, hyper, big crazy idiots and that’s not a Lab to me haha I much prefer the calmer temperament of the English/show Labs but then a lot of them are lazy and/or fat and obese so it’s a toss up haha I do like the block head and super calm personality though. And some are super smart. I think they can be great dogs but there are a lot of poorly bred as well as poorly trained/raised ones out there too. And I think with bad owners any dog would be a pain in the rear haha I find most Lab owners annoying tbh. :lau but the dogs themselves are usually good.

But definitely big, stubborn, dopey, trouble makers haha

I like Goldens. Such sweet personalities and just a little bit “softer” and willing to please. Less hard headed haha

But then of course there is the coat maintenance, ear care, etc. while Labs are more just wash and wear.

And of course the cancer in Goldens. :(

But I do love the breed. Both breeds.

And they do say for more serious work, like an actual job, that Labs are better because they take the work more seriously and work really hard when directed. Goldens are big goof balls. I believe that haha

By real work I mean like guide and service dogs, search and rescue, detection, etc. etc. not that Goldens can’t do it but just that Labs I guess take it a bit more seriously. There is a reason they mostly choose Labs for these jobs haha

But if we’re just talking about the average pet Lab, I can see why most people hate them haha hyper, under exercised, under trained (if at all), usually off leash charging people and dogs followed by “oh he’s friendly” etc lol and/or obese and also way way too common. Can see why people would get a bad taste lol

But they’re sweet and goofy and can be nice dogs if you meet the right one but there aren’t very many good ones around.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling and detailing the thread. :lau
YES!! ALL of this.. exactly!! I call them the “too much” dogs.... they shed too much.. they eat too much.. they crap too much.. they stink too much... they whine too much.. chew too much.. dig too much.. bark too much.. demand too much........!! They are all about “me, me, me!” Feed me NOW.. play with me NOW.. put me out NOW.. put me in NOW.. pet me NOW.... so on and so on and so on......:th

They are definitely not for everyone lol most pet ones I find are stubborn, hardheaded, hyper, fat, untrained etc lol

And I love budgies. I want more. :hit
We’ve had four in our 28 years of marriage.. always had a lab around.. so it was very weird not to have one as they were part of our lifestyle.. my hubs trained each one for hunting.. first one he didn’t train enough so wasn’t a good hunter but could have been and a very aggressive dog in general.. I really loved him though... second was unbelievably gorgeous but the absolute worst! Would never train to hunt.. jump fences... dig.. bark constantly.. hard headed... just insane!! Hated him! Someone poisoned him :(... I promise it wasn’t me! Third was a female and best hunter for sure.. she was sweet and a good dog.. but still a lab:barnie... fourth was her son and he was a good dog as well and a good hunter... but still a lab :th... and we definitely train our dogs to know who’s the real leader... I think with Labs you just never know... you can definitely have duds! My sister had one that was aggressive as well...

Lmaooo those are definitely true. :lau

They are always hungry! Lol

Although that said I feel like some of these could be any dog lol

Oh yeah, I’m sure you guys are good trainers, but the average pet owner isn’t lol, but yeah it definitely depends! They’re definitely a lot of dog. A true dog’s dog lol they love being dirty and/or wet and smelly and rolling in stuff!! Haha and we had one that roamed all over. Of course my dad let him but still. And he was obsessed with his ball and food lmao

And wow that’s weird about the aggression! I have heard of it cropping up more in the breed though and in Goldens too. :( I think I read it’s becoming more common because of all the backyard breeders and people not breeding for or caring about temperament? But idk haha

I have an Amazon. She's a loud pain in the butt that tries to bite me constantly. I finished her hand feeding, she was great until sexual maturity. Now she likes my husband and hates me. I would not recommend large parrots. They are a huge commitment. Mine is 27 years old. Still a lot of life in her.

Cockatiel are extremely loud. Their screech will bust my eardrums. I will have another.

Keep in lots of budgies is messy. My 4 need daily vacuuming and cleaning around the cage from all the feathers and dust. They also like to toss their seeds. So keep that in mind. When I put them out in the summer I get a break from all the cleaning. It is easier to care for less.

Thanks for all the info! Very helpful. Seems like I definitely don’t want one of those big ones then haha and wow that’s old! Some of the big ones live to like 50 or 60 right?

And yeah that’s true. Didn’t think of that. I’ve had them before a few times and they were very messy lol have had 4, then a pair, then just one. They were all messy and pooped everywhere too lol but they were fun. It was fun watching the group play haha

And I wonder if a seed guard would help at all?

Yes! Very messy! We have four as well..

Oh wow that’s awesome. They’re fun but seem messy lol

Well you really know dogs, girl

Yup! Been around them my whole life as well as done tons of research and trained all our own dogs and helped a ton with my brothers dogs. And currently I’m a dog walker/pet sitter and trying to get certified as a professional dog trainer haha

That’s really great! Sounds like a fun job!

We have a seed guard.... doesn’t help much ... that’s why I’m building the outdoor cage... so they can make all the mess they want... plus, I figured since the chickens live in a mansion then the parakeets should get too also :D
