The true name is budgerigar parakeets, but that's a mouthful so people call them generally budgies, or parakeets. To me they are interchangeable, but when you use the term budgie people know exactly what species you are talking about. There are multiple types of parakeets, so in the bird world it's a general term that refers to a diverse group of birds with individual names, but all are considered parakeets.
English budgies are bigger and more fancy. They look like they have bigger heads. American budgies are lighter, and more active. I have never seen an English budgie in person, only in pictures.
My grandpa kept a parakeet, so I keep them because their chatter reminds me of him. I've had tame ones, I've bred them and had really tame one. I currently have 4 that aren't tamed. They can be noisy at times, but I enjoy them.
Thank you! This is very helpful and I’ve learned a lot haha I thought they called them American Parakeets and English Budgies to differentiate but you are right that there are lots of types of parakeets so it does make more sense to call them all budgies haha
That makes sense. I feel like a more active bird would be more fun but I’ve heard the English ones are tamer or more calm and easier to tame? But I think they’re pretty rare so idk.
I really want a lineolated parakeet (linnie) one day or a bourkes, both are supposed to be awesome and possibly better but idk haha maybe one day!
I want a lot of different animals and many breeds/varieties even within the same species.

And aww that’s very sweet.

Although I’m not sure if I could stand it all day every day aha I do like my quiet sometimes.

But it is nice and it’s also pretty.
I’ve been debating between getting a pair or even just one and having a super tame, friendly one, or whether to get like a flock, like 4-6 or so, and just mostly leave them alone, give them lots of toys/stuff to do and a flight cage and just watch them. Because both ways of keeping them are so different. Like on the one hand, it can be really fun to teach them tricks and/or have them hang out with you, but then on the other hand it is really neat to watch them interact with each other and play and just listen to their chatter and singing haha
I think what I would really love to do is have an aviary one day with a bunch of parakeets and maybe some cockatiels too. I think that would be really fun to watch/hang out with them in an aviary setting and a bit more natural. Bet it’d be fun to watch them fly all over haha maybe some quail for the bottom. Thinking maybe an outdoor aviary or indoor/outdoor with maybe a tunnel or window or door or something connecting to an inside aviary or at least an inside cage. I think that would be cool.
That said, I also love the bigger parrots and want one eventually. I love green cheeked conures or maybe an Amazon or grey or something sometime haha
Everybody always says the larger parrots are really loud but I’ve heard some say that they don’t mind it as much or like don’t find their parrot annoying because while it’s louder volume wise, they don’t do it as often? Whereas parakeets while quieter volume wise constantly chatter all day? So I guess it’s what you prefer. Idk. I think I could handle or even like both but I did think it was a good point and that I might almost prefer a bigger one cause they’re at least quiet most of the time aha
Anyway, sorry for rambling as well as totally hijacking your thread.
