Ladder to the roost?

Our perch is about 2 ft off the ground, and we were wondering if we need to include a ladder for the girls to get up there? Or will they be fine on their own?

If your roost is only 2 ft. off the ground they shouldn't need a ladder. Just a recommendation though, I'd make your roost a little higher off the ground. Chickens are "jungle" birds & their nature is to find a high perch that is safe from predators when they sleep. Of course that's only if your coop design allows.

First of all, how old are your chickens? We adjusted the roost height as our chickens grew. Here are some pictures to show the growth along with our current roosts. Hope this helps!


This one was just about 3 inches off the ground.

This was our second roosting area and was about 5 or 6 inches off the ground.

Not sure the height on this one, but the chickens fight over the top roost each night.

I put a single stick for my younger smaller chickens to get to the roost. Other than that they get there on their own and my roost is about 5 foot to 7 foot up.
