Lady feeding raptors - law on my side?

I think your on the right path to find legal recourse to end the problem...while fireworks may be a pleasant thought, the repercussions could be a problem. The games can mate with hens, they produce a startling variety of colors and patterns, typically they are pleasant personalities, but you can always get a dud. Best bet is to get a mature proven roos from a reputable person who wants to part with an extra. Take your time and study the options. Good luck with the annoying boarder.

Okay. Thank you for your help in answering my questions about those roosters, and good idea to look for a mature one who is proven to be good.

UPDATE:

Today, I've been on the phone for about an hour trying to find out more information about Agricultural Fireworks Use Permitting in The State of Florida.

I've spoken to the Florida Department of Agriculture, Seminole County Sheriff's Department, Seminole County Department of Public Safety, Florida Wildlife Conservation Division, Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission, and USDA Farm Service Agency.

It doesn't seem like anyone can give me a definitive answer on the permitting. Although I know I can go pick one up at a local fireworks store with proof of managing an operational farm...

I also spoke with FFWC and they said that it is illegal to feed/handle birds of prey without a permit; so they are going to have an officer call me to get some details about the lady across the way.

EDIT: Alright! I found the law that I have been looking for!

"1791.07 Agricultural and fish hatchery use.--Nothing in this chapter shall prohibit the importation, purchase, sale, or use of fireworks used or to be used solely and exclusively in frightening birds from agricultural works and fish hatcheries; and such use shall be governed entirely by the rules prescribed by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services."

Looks like it is time to call back up the Florida Department of Agriculture to discuss their rules!

Now I'm off to speak with Department of Financial Services and The Fire Marshall... since they are the ones that know about the law. Even though the law quotes the Department of Agriculture...

I'll be calling them tomorrow, as they are now closed. I'm praying that I can get an answer this time, and that they can tell me what the rules are pertaining to this law.

Goodness me........what a big halabaloo you are making over nothing. Thank goodness I dont have a neighbour like you.
Do you honestly think that the hawks would not know your chickens were there unless "called in" by your neighbour?
The only person you are upsetting is you.
Next time the horse lady comes, look the other way, pretend she is not there and I guarantee you will notice no difference to you or your chickens life. And talking about life, you may want to get one.

Cheers........The Dog

Gotta agree with The big dog
Mabe you should buy more land where you can't see what your neighbors are doing, that is what we did 30 years ago and my neighbors don't know what i do back here and i don't know what they do.
No matter what something will be after your birds of they are not protected, i use dogs exclusively and in the daytime my birds have lots of cover while some of the dogs are at rest.
I have 100's of free range fowl of all kinds and hawks too, they don't bother my birds because they know better than to enter the safe zone.

I would get a permit to kill the hawks.I would not mess with noisemakers unless it was the natural kind like kids

I have often thought about feeding the mice and house sparrows to hawks, but figured they need to catch their own food(what I can't catch),so like all other wild animals I let them fend for themselves.

Probably the hawks would be around anyway without this goof feeding them, but maybe in less numbers.Either way if they are increasing their kill rate on your chickens I would point this out to your state wildlife as a reason for needing the hawk killing permit.

Her accusation that you killed her pet hawk is also annoying.

Shamos sound cool!

I agree there...feeding any wild creature is stupid...course, you can't argue with stoopid. It's hard to look the other way too, as far as I'm concerned all the wildlife belongs to me whether or not it's on my place and why people have to mess with nature is just plain stoopid. When you see a wrong you have a moral obligation to do something about it....everyone knows not to feed wildlife...like I said before...stoopid. it's good you are going through legal channels, it's why they have laws like that - lotta stupid out there that need them. I doubt I'd have the patience. :)

I would think that it would be illegal to feed any wildlife with the exception of song birds ? You could also use Air horns to scare off the hawks that is what I use and I have horses and they where scared at first but now they don't even look up when I blow them.

Multiple parties have indicated concern about legalities and what is right and wrong about attracting wildlife (hawks). What about when the hawk is actually investing most of effort going after small rodents in pasture and large grasshoppers assuming hawk is a red-tail? You are trying to drive off a critter, that is getting an honest meal, just because you think it might come after your chickens. A hawk may take a chicken now and then but the smaller stuff repressents the bulk of what is actually consumed.
