My barred rock laid a gelatinous yolk. What in the world? She hasn't laid an egg in a few weeks. She has been in the box, but not laying. In fact, she hasn't laid since her bestie went broody almost 4 weeks ago. She's been treated for mites. There have been electrolytes in her water for a week. She has free access to oyster shells and I make them eggs a couple times a week with crushed shell in them. Thoughts?

One of my first hens laid her first egg with just a yolk and a little albumen; the shell was stuck to her vent. So, it could be your hen's body getting back in the process. Also, I'd try adding oyster shells and grit to the feed, a handful or two of each, I've heard of hens who don't eat oyster shells or grit on their own free will. Make sure that their layer feed has 16% - 18% protein, 3% calcium, and 0.5% phosphorus. I think your hen will be fine.

THANKS, Blackberry18. I will give it a try!
