Hi Ann, Congratulations! I also have a landlord, the coop was already on the property, but still had to jump through the hoops. I always wanted to have chickens and now I get to have some! I have a large yard around the house and had to put up a high fence. I had no idea how many chickens that yard would support, for free range, and now realize it supports the 4 I have maximum. We have had a dry summer (in Australia but originally from Illinois) and the grass wasn't growing much. I can tell when they are hungry and the yard is just barely feeding them each day, so glad I have only the 4. And, some days I get 4 eggs, some days only 2. The eggs support my house and a friend's family. Good luck with your chickens. Mine run up the driveway when I come home and greet me like the dog would do so they are very good pets as well. :) Maura

May I also suggest you take a good long look at Henderson's Handy Dandy Chicken Breeds Chart at www.Ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chook.html. Any time I get a hankering for a breed I see here on BYC, I refer to that chart to check the information. Very handy resource.

For a small flock, you cant go wrong with Plymouth Rock - Barred (Barred Rocks), Buff Orpingtons, Black australorps or any combination of those three. Umm.. Delawares.... Buckeyes... Good heritage breeds.

Oh, and welcome to BYC, too!

Welcome from Southern California! So cool of your landlord. Good luck at staying at just five; as soon as friends, family and neighbors get a taste of your homegrown eggs you'll need more girls to supply the demand, Trust me--I started with six hens, now have 13 and four regular customers! Good luck and have fun; they are a blast!

Yes, I agree! My friends hang out for the eggs and one family makes Spaghetti Carbonara regularly, which uses eggs in the cream sauce. They rave over the yellow color of the sauce due to the rich yolk color. Raising chickens and sharing the eggs has become such a worthwhile project, and adds a quality of life I never expected!
