I am gathering birds for my landrace project. my goals are: big chunky dual purpose birds, disease resistant capable of surviving on free range. of course I'll be feeding them as well but with hard times knocking the door I wonder if chicken feed will be available.
I have already got landrace chicken that are about 50-60% of what I want. that saves me at least 3 years of breeding. I will mix them with egyptian fayoumis (disease resistant and good foragers). some of them I will mix with black star and the next step will be F1 landrace x fayoumi/ f1 landrace x black star. I also plan to breed a barred landrace roo with hybrid legbar hens. I should get autosexing green layers. I might need to cross them back to a legbar roo if I can get one. hens are easy to check for green/blue egg gene (those with 2 copies have egg shells blue/green both inside and outside). these green layers would be much bigger than legbars and would probably lay more eggs.
