Langshan or Cochin?

This is Meatball. Meatball was our "bonus" exotic chick with our Murray McMurray order and when s/he was a peep, s/he was chocolate brown dorsally fading into a tan color ventrally with no other markings. We thought Meatball was a Partridge Cochin and we also assumed that any chick being sent as a "bonus" would be a cockerel since that sex is less ordered and it's a better alternative to culling.

But now I'm beginning to wonder if Meatball is a Black Langshan and if he is actually a she. In this picture Meatball is 10 weeks old. Any thoughts?

Right now your "he" looks like a "she" because she doesn't have any big combs or wattles. I think that she is going to be a girl.

its a cockerel due to its color a hen would look like this also for a 10 week old the comb is way to red and so are the wattles plus hens/pullets dont get that much comb nor wattle at 10 weeks of age

I've been surfing the web looking at pictures of all the possibilities and I'm still leaning towards Patridge Cochin cockerel. He has been very slow-growing; in fact, at age 6 weeks, he had only just feathered out on his back. So maybe the fact that comb and wattles appear so small is that he is still developing?

cochin cockerels are slow feathering mine (bantam though) is still feathering in and hes about 5 months

i have never seen a chick feather so slowly

Meatball was so funny looking because at 6 weeks he was bigger than all the rest but was still fuzzy!

I agree with hdowden. I have had partridge cochins. The pullets look entirely different. Wait until you see him when he matures. The green feathers on those boys are amazing- breathtakingly beautiful! And their personalities are nice from my experience. I didn't keep mine longer than one year, though.

only true like 90% of the time our extras (10) were supposed to be all cockerels but we have ended up with at least 3 pullets but i am 200% sure that is a partridge cochin cockerel
