He's young but turning out Fabulous. This is from a Blue-on-Blue Mateing. He's carrying the silver gene. My Blues are gorgeous looking!

I'm sorry, what is this "silver" gene? Was he the result of two birds that were carriers for recessive white?

Your blue pictures make me smile! That poor boy! Had to be some nice wind coming through that day!

The silver gene comes from a solid blue on blue mateing. The wind was blowing a little bit but I caught the pic when he turned his head and it turned out to be a great pic.

Langshans are probably one of the only breeds that have not been bred to death and turned into garbage. Everyone that I've turned onto Langshans are so surprised when they see what a hardy bird they are. Good egg layers and good meat. They're a true heritage breed in my opinion. They do grow slow and like to eat a lot. But anything truely heritage will grow slow. Gotta work on the frame with a good diet and then build the bulk with a Langshan.

I don't believe that is the silver gene, the silver gene refers to a white bird, specifically one that is sex-linked. The blue x blue breeding resulting in a black bird MAY result in a bird more able to produce blues when bred to another such bird. I have never done the back to back breeding, so I'm unsure as to the truthfulness of the statement.

James, your cockeral is beautiful. He reminds me of a Langshan bantam roo I had years ago that I thought was the most elegant and beautiful bird I had ever had the honor of owning. But that was by my standards, not SOP. Thank you for sharing him with the rest of us and stirring up some fond memories for me.
