Langshan Thread!!!

Pics
Interesting...I know many breeders that have never bred according to this silver gene and are very well known.

How can this produce "junk"? The color is a good blue color throughout and will breed according to the blue genetics. What does the silver gene give to the blue color than a non-silver will not.

Another thing, if one is only breeding Langshans, why should they be concerned about someone they are selling to using the bird to outcross?

Just trying to understand your view on this.

Very true Old Fort mailman. This is why when I get a true blue I keep it because people will breed any black bird in there and call it a true blue. True blue pheno and geno type will carry a silver gene. If you don't know for sure your bird is a true blue then future projects can be a catastrophe.

Hi, I justed wanted to share some pics of my Black Langshan "Curly". He'll be a year old in about 2 1/2 months(He was hatched within a day or so of Easter). I just weighed him this morning, he weighs 8 lbs. Since you guys probably know a lot more than I do about Langshans...I was wondering if you could tell me if he might be show quality? Thanks!

He blinked right when I took the picture, sorry!

I'm not sure whether you'll be able to tell if he's show quality or not just judging by the pictures though...if you can't could you give me like a requirement checklist - or something along that line?

Thanks again!

Curly is real cute! I would give him a blue ribbon!
The only thing I know about Langshans is from the side, their shape should look like a martini glass. Hope I said that right!

Sorry Chick Lover! I didn't receive a notice that there had been a reply to the thread!

On your male, the things that jump out at me are his breast. Do you see how it looks like someone "scooped" out a chink in the first picture? It should be well-rounded but not out of proportion. His tail is a bit pinched and not a good height. His comb is a little large in proportion to his head and lacks the 5 points.

He has a lovely sheen and may do well in some local 4H and FFA shows. And even some county fairs! I'm sure people who walk by will be very impressed by his size compared to all the other birds!

No, it's fine!
Okay, do you think his breast will fill out any more? Yeah, he usually hold his tail better than that...
Poor guy, there's more out of wack than I thought there would be. He's the first Langshan I've had, so I really didn't know much about them. But I'm really starting to think that they're a great breed. I just wish I would have gotten some hens. You see, I ordered 3 straight run, and all were males. Do you have any hens? Are they good layers and setters?
Thank you for your help! I really appriciate it! I think I'm going to enter him in the 4H poultry contest this year just for the fun of it.

Arg! The subscriptions on here stink!

Sorry for the delay! He may fill in a bit more up top but the "scoop" will most likely stay. The hens are very sweet birds. Inquisitive, friendly and always underfoot. They lay very well but production birds will probably lay a bit better than a show line. The show lines will also be larger than their production-bred counterparts. I have had several broody females, some to the point of neurotic!

The smaller amount of leg-festering than a Cochin or Brahma means mud and snow are not as big of an issue but be sure to check regularly for possible problems.

On another note: all done with my Langshan hatching this year! Lots of chicks everywhere! Some almost 6 weeks and others almost 3! Going to be going up to the "big pen" soon. Gonna have lots of pairs and trips this year for sale. Several whites as well as some blacks and possibly some blues. Anyone interested feel free to contact me as I will be happy to meet up at shows.

Happy hatching everyone! Chick Lover, you should definitely try again! The hens and cockerels are worth it!!
