Langshan Thread!!!

Pics
I wish you were up here! I've got some black pullets (recessive white) that I gotta get rid of to make way for my blue/splash/black babies!

I am in New York and would love more langshans! I have one from Skylinepoultry. I am embarrassed to say I am not sure what recessive white means..

I like blue too!

Hey Cydney! Don't worry about not knowing what it means! We all have to learn things one way or another!

Langshans carry recessive white. For it to be expressed (come out as a white bird) there must be two white genes in place. A bird that carries recessive white but does not express it can be black or blue (in Langshans). When a bird that carries recessive white is bred to a white, the offspring can be black or white. (Because black is dominant to white, even in this instance. The black will still mask the recessive white in the next generation.)

These chicks are the result of a black male that carries recessive white bred to white hens. All of the chicks carry recessive white, but do not show it.

That was probably very confusing! Sorry! Typing this on my phone makes it difficult to come across as cognitive!

How far away are you from State College, PA?

How often do Langshans go broody? When I went out this evening to lock up the coop and do a final egg check, I found my blue Langshan hunkered down on top of 4 eggs in one of the nest boxes. She was not happy when I moved her around and took the eggs. I don't have a breeding rooster so they are not fertile. I may have to send for some fertile eggs if she persists with the broody behavior! Last year, I had my top hen, a black Australorp, go broody 3 times and try each time to hatch a wooden egg. This year, I did not put the wooden eggs in the nest boxes hoping that none of the girls would go broody. I would love to hatch some Langshans, though!

Hey!

It really depends on the bird. I had one bird that was my eternal broody. She would lay 1 (malformed) egg, then go broody. I tried EVERYTHING. Nothing worked on her. When she started losing her health, I broke down and bought her some cheap chicks at Atwoods. She was a great mother! Until she died unexpectedly inside of a safe barn. Nothing got her...she just died. She was maybe 1 year, 6 months old?

Then I had another just go broody on me...she did not do well with her eggs. I think she was just too klutzy. Bought 2 Buff Orpington chicks from the store. They died in a matter of a week. Still clueless as to how...they never thrived like they should have. Booted her butt back to the breeding pen.

I like to promote the broodiness. I want to breed from birds that show it (not like the one hen that died doing it!) as it is part of the breed history and, if something should happen to my incubator, I will have backups.

I thought I would add some photos of two birds that I was able to get ahold of. My male Clyde is getting lazy in his duties (who can blame him? He's a grumpy old man!), so I took Harvey up on his offer for a nice cockerel from the same bloodlines. His tail is a bit lower than I'd like, but still has a nice large frame, nice long shank and gorgeous dark eyes with a wide head.

And his gorgeous girlfriend, a splash hen that Harvey was kind enough to pick up for me! She is the first splash I have ever held of this breed. I was really excited to see her!

Beautiful birds!!! I'm hoping to have a splash some time soon!!! My blue is definitely broody! She was hunkered down in the nest box and would not move even when 2 other hens sat in there with her. She has plucked her underside clean of feathers to keep her nonexistent eggs warm. I think that it is finally time to buy some eggs from Skyline! WHOO HOO!!!
