Langshan Thread!!!

Hey Cydney! Don't worry about not knowing what it means! We all have to learn things one way or another!
Langshans carry recessive white. For it to be expressed (come out as a white bird) there must be two white genes in place. A bird that carries recessive white but does not express it can be black or blue (in Langshans). When a bird that carries recessive white is bred to a white, the offspring can be black or white. (Because black is dominant to white, even in this instance. The black will still mask the recessive white in the next generation.)
These chicks are the result of a black male that carries recessive white bred to white hens. All of the chicks carry recessive white, but do not show it.
That was probably very confusing! Sorry! Typing this on my phone makes it difficult to come across as cognitive!
How far away are you from State College, PA?
lol! I think I will never get it!!!!! Well maybe a little bit..thanks! I am not sure how far away I am from State College..I am two hours from Binghamton, NY...I will have to check it out!

Cydney, maybe a crayons example...I just thought of this:

Say you color on a piece of paper with white crayon. Then color over that color with a black crayon. The black crayon is masking the white crayon, even though it's there.

The white crayon, when the black is taken away will show through.

The black crayon is dominant. The white crayon is recessive. So, when the black crayon is covering the white crayon, the black crayon is the only color you will see.

So now that I've shown that I've been drinking...let's make it a little more fun.

The black crayon covering the white crayon will only show black, but white is "carried" underneath. When a chicken has recessive white (meaning you need two copies of white to show the white color) and is bred to a black chicken, the chicks will all be black, but will carry recessive white. When the chicks from this pairing are bred together, the recessive white can show up, since all of the offspring carry both recessive white and dominant black.

Does that make more sense?

I think I get it, so my black Langshan LF pullets WILL produce some white if bred to a white roo right!?
Violet is doing well, the aracaunas have settled in with her, although they are going to their new home Sunday, so we'll she how violet does with the main pack.

Yep! Your LF pullets will produce white AND black if bred to a white male (because they still show and carry dominant black).

Aww...poor Violet. Gonna lose her buddies!

I don't know, I got her from a lady, and forgot to ask her,

Hello! She looks to be a bit older than 2 months. She looks to be a bantam also. Does she have yellow on the underside of her feet or is it the pic?

Very cute! Congrats on your girl!

Just saw in a thread above about Banties, I did not know Langshan Banams existed outside UK? Is it from an old strain, anybody know? They died out here in the 60's but was re-created here some 40 years ago. Anyway, enough Bantie-talk, here comes two of my cheeky Welsh Girls: An apple a day keeps a few tings away, but not a hungry 4 months old Langshan-hen.
