Langshan Thread!!!

Here are my spring breeders. I have have another quad that don't fit in this pen and are running with my layers. I've hatched out a couple blues and look forward to how they develop.

Keesmom, I LOVE your white pullet!

So pretty!

BeccaOH, I like your male! Is he the same size as the females or is he larger? I like the spread of his tail.

The chicks that I posted photos of are almost fully feathered. They've grown FAST. Amazingly fast. I think I'm going to have to put in the blue male in with Clyde. 6 females seem to be a bit too many for Clyde. He's never been one to overbreed, but with the heat getting ready to start up, I'm thinking a younger male will help keep fertility up. I'm just not sure if I WANT to use a first year cockerel with the breeding pen to see how he will fully mature.

I love the white too! I'm glad she matured to a pure white instead of that dingy grey she was when younger. But maybe whites look that way when young? I'm not usually a fan of all white birds, maybe they remind me of meaties which are anything but pretty. She's different -tall, elegant, fluffy feet that run all over the yard. They love to free range.

He is definitely larger, but somehow it isn't showing up in this picture angle. My reserve roo is taller than him, though. He has been looking very gangly, but he is finally starting to fill out nicely.

Oh my Lord. My chicks are almost too big now! I think I'll have to take them back to OK soon...but they're so good! Being all quiet until they need something!

Whelp, my babies are almost ready to go outside. I won't kick them out for another 3 weeks (until the next clutch hatches):

Let's see, I uploaded the first pics 4/22/2010, they were about a week old...

They're about 7 weeks old in these photos. Not too bad...

Ahhh .... there's that beautiful boy! THIS is the BBR (big beautiful roo) that has me looking for a Langshan boy to add to my flock. I have to say, that if you've never met a Langshan in person ... try to do so. The size is just astounding. I was floored when this handsome boy wandered up to see what was going on.

I'm getting langshans for my birthday:woot My mom ordered them for me yesterday morning, and I'm so excited. They are supposed to ship in two weeks, as long as everything goes well.

Hi. Thought I'd chime in. I have two Black Langshans - when pullet chicks, they were the shyest two of the 25 chicks I ordered (mixture of 6 wyandottes (columbian and gold laced), 2 dominiques, and a favorelle pullets for eggs and 14 buckeye cockerels for meat). They always held back from the group when egg yolks were fed, they'd eat on the fringes only. As they grew, one just seemed to develop more quickly. Every time I saw her my heart warmed and I couldn't help but but smile inside and out, she just made me happy to look at her! Poetry in motion. If you've ever seen the movie Lady Hawk and noted the horse Goliath, a Fresien (spelling?) - that is what she reminded me of especially in the way she moved. However, the drastic development difference made me realize that I may have a male on my hands. So I named her Samson after a more honorable man than Goliath, but we called her Sammy.

The other little thing that just seemed to never get bigger I named Little Bit. It took her at least two to three months longer to begin laying than the others her age! She is the sweetest thing. Always follows me around, like to be held (almost as much as the Dominique). Here she is now:

Here are pics of Sammy nearing beddown time, I know I have others of him younger, and standing with his tail feathers up, they just aren't on this computer. I'll find them and maybe take some more to get your expert opinion on him. I, of course, will always think he's beautiful, even if he's not show or breeder quality (grin).

I had to throw this roost up because the Buckeye roos and my first flock filled my main roost. So this is where Sammy and HIS girls chose to sleep until we got the buckeyes into their own pen. He now sleeps on the top roost. Yes Sammy is a rooster and he still makes my heart sooo glad when I see him. He is also a sweetheart. The only time I've seen him get rough was in defense of his hens. He comes to his name, eats out of my hand but I can't touch him. Or I should say I won't touch him. I don't want to cross the line of respect I guess. When he and Little bit were small and losing the last bits of chick fluff, I'd picked them up and preen them. Those were the last times Sammy has been handled. Little Bit sought my company out probably because she saw how the other hens dropped for me. She wanted to be held and I think she was going through 'puberty' for lack of a better term. The main roo is supposed to provide since I provide more than Sammy, I guess I'm the head rooster in their eyes. Little Bit used to be the next to the lowest on the pecking order. But I think because of her size that is beginning to change a little.

I have some questions: I want to handle Sammy. How can I teach him to trust me? The older hens seem to think he looks better with no leg feathers, no front of the neck feathers and its fun to occasionally grab a tail feather. I want to apply triple atibiotic ointment to his feet, legs and neck, but I don't want to lose the trust he has in me. Any advice? What do you suggest I do to help his feathers to grow? He'll be a year in July.

Can anyone post pics of typical Langshan eggs? I thought they were supposed to have a purplish cast and thought I knew which Little Bits were (I have two that lay eggs with a plum cast I though she laid one of them), but I'm sure I saw her lay an egg the other day and it wasn't one with a plum cast. So I'm confused.

Thanks for any advice.
