Langshan Thread!!!

Fresh out of his shipping crate. Thought y'all might want to see. Size reference, I'm 6'3" and his head comes up to my knee or just above.
Nice founding father. Have him twirl around and snap a few more pictures.

Went out and snapped a couple. They go where they will so catching a decent pic is challenging, lol. The ladies don't want to come up for air...its a bit windy outside so they are a little ruffled. As you can see they are all black/green sheen.

Beautiful, beautiful birds. Wow!

Hi there! Hoping for a little help. I am TOTALLY new to chickens and I am trying to figure out if my blue langshan is a he or she. S/he is 12 weeks old. What do you think?

I'm going to let the experts answer you on this one. My guess is always boy when their combs and wattles are that red at 12 weeks. But it seems like I am often wrong!

Welcome. I would be pretty confident that you have a cockerel there. That is a LOT of comb and wattle development for 12 weeks. Take a look at the saddle area (feathers on back right before tail) and see if any pointed male saddle feathers are coming in.

I hope you can have roosters where your at. I have 8-9 month old pullets without that much comb and wattles. ;)

Welcome to BYC. I'm with the others, predicting a few practice crows within a couple weeks.
Or maybe you will be lucky and he won't crow until he is much older! I don't think that I've had a single Langshan cockerel who crowed before 20 weeks. Now, my Marans/Marans mix boys have all crowed before 10 weeks! Once they crow, they have to go to my friend's 10 acre farm. I'm so happy that the Langshans are slow to mature because that means that I get to keep them in town for a longer period of time.
