Langshan Thread!!!

On-going discussion in Homesteading thread, does anyone have pictures of a Langshan dressed out on a platter? I haven't been back in it long enough to have extras butchered yet.

LOL! Sorry...I don't usually roast a whole bird. I tend to burn things that way. Even at the store I'll buy a whole bird then cut it into parts. I'd be a bad homesteader... :(

haha, I usually part them out too, just because. I'm really bad at it too because I send them away for processing. Don't have the heart to do it myself. Yup, I'm pretty much a wuss. They sure do taste good when you get them back and cook them up though!

I can do it, I usually just don't. Mine are SO slow growing it's hardly worth the time to dress them out. The only edible part would be the wings and legs on younger birds. After the first 6 months, no point in even roasting since it'll be tough as boot leather. I've never tried to cook a LF Langshan after 6 months, but trust me, the bantams? Couldn't even bite into the meat. Course...that could have been me forgetting that you shouldn't freeze the meat immediately after cutting it off the bird...

Could be. I didn't have any issues with the large fowl at 6 months or so. The not freezing thing is really important with any standard bird using for meat. I've also never been in a position to give a lot of range to growing birds and keep perches low and give them to them very late (was always scared of giving them perches too early and deforming the keel). Both of those could factor in to toughness as well.

Edit: Never tried eating the bantams. Just sent extra males to auction. Can only keep so many ya know.
