Thanks - this is very helpful. My girls were hatched on 4/26 so it seems like I have a ways to go...

Yep, his voice is a deep one but he's a big boy! Yesterday, he only crowed in the coop before I let them out. Today, he did that and then was crowing out in the yard. He also started dancing around his two brooder mates (blue Langshan pullet and all black Langshan mix). Now I need to decide if he is going to the farm this weekend or if I will try a rooster collar on him.LOL! Mine usually keep that deep crow! I'm in shock that he's already got a deep crow instead of the *eeeeeek eeeeeeeekkkkkkkkk* noise!
I will have Pita Pinta eggs hopefully by late spring. They are my second favorite breed right now and are supposed to be an excellent meat & egg breed. The breeder that I got the eggs from said that they are great layers and a different friend said that the meat is comparable to Bresse with the skin being even tastier. We could do an egg swap if you are interested! I also will have lots of Bresse eggs by then if you are interested in them.Well, bad news on the egg front. Only gonna have those 8 LF from the looks of it. Apparently when everyone started sniffling and coughing from the change in temp overnight and me medicating as a preventative since I did lose that male...anything that WOULD have grown in them died. So...now I have a male that is molting and obviously NOT breeding and a whole bunch of hens putting out eggs like never before, along with 10 broody hens...Wonder if I should be bad and go "buy" some random eggs somewhere to have a few breeds to play with.
Nah...
Ok, for fun I snapped a few more pics of Thor and the blue girl with the cushion. They are both just over 28 weeks old and were broody raised so not handled very much. I keep looking at the girl because sometimes she looks like she has the cushion and sometimes she doesn't. I noticed today that I make her very nervous especially when I have the camera and she keeps her tail down which shows the cushion. But when she is far enough away from me, her tail comes up and the cushion disappears. She does seem to be on the small side so would she be a negative for breeding due to the sometimes cushion as well as her size? Just trying to decide whether to keep her with my layers or move her to the farm with Thor.
She is nervously watching me with the camera. Slight cushion showing.
Honestly, her cushion is not that bad. I'm a little more concerned with the shorter legs and flat back though. Personally, I wouldn't use her as a breeder for these reasons, but if you can find a male with longer legs and a better U, she might be useful. Especially if you only have a few pullets to choose from. I do like her color though!
Back shot with her still keeping her eye on me. That is Thor behind her. Notice how much bigger he is!
She escaped the scary person is on the run! No cushion showing or at least not much.
Now for some new pics of Thor. I know that he has some more growing to do but do you think that he has any potential or would he be better off going to freezer camp? His downfalls IMO are a long back, needs more depth in his chest, needs a wider tail spread, needs more width in his body, and his legs are closer together than I would like. I'm not in a hurry to make a decision but he did start crowing last week and I need to move him to the farm where I keep my breeding stock.

I like Thor. His length of leg and his back will "amazingly" shorten up once he matures a bit more. I agree with the tail spread, but he looks to have a good width of feather on his main tail feathers and his tail spread looks better than the blue pullet. I like his comb and wing carriage and while he lacks a little bit in the chest, that might come with age. That tail might widen up a bit as he matures too! I'd definitely keep him as a potential breeder! It looks like he "might" have a little bit of leakage in his hackles but you breed him to a black and #1 it'll help darken up his overall color and get a bit more lacing on the offspring and #2, might help increase the melanizers that will cover that leakage. I feel like I know where this bird came from and if you happen to have any white pullets, you might want to put him in with the whites and see if he'll produce some white offspring later on down the road!![]()
Not the best angle but you can see is tail spread is not the best.

Get out of my head!!!!The pullet, I think my biggest concerns are low tail angle and it's a pinched tail. If you kept her for breeding, make sure the male compensates those areas.
The cockerel, I actually like his body, and leg length. His tail will come around, but he holds it so tightly I'd consider him an inappropriate match for this pullet. The long back will disappear when his hackles fill out and his tail finishes.
On tails when viewed from behind a nice wide tent is good to see, but even better is an inverted "U" shape, a nice wide arch.
