Langshan Thread!!!

The pullet, I think my biggest concerns are low tail angle and it's a pinched tail. If you kept her for breeding, make sure the male compensates those areas.

The cockerel, I actually like his body, and leg length. His tail will come around, but he holds it so tightly I'd consider him an inappropriate match for this pullet. The long back will disappear when his hackles fill out and his tail finishes.

On tails when viewed from behind a nice wide tent is good to see, but even better is an inverted "U" shape, a nice wide arch.
Thanks, BGMatt! I was pretty sure it would be a no on the boy. None of the roos/cockerels that I currently have would help with her tail. I am still hoping to get some chicks and/or eggs from the breeder in AZ. The birds of his that I saw in Stockton last year had such nice U shaped tails. I am trying to be patient but I feel like I am a year behind in getting started. Of all the chicks that I hatched and raised from 4 different sources, I have narrowed it down to 3 roos but I'm not really happy with any of them. Perhaps Thor will keep developing and take their place. And of the 5 or 6 hens that I have, only 1 or 2 are really okay for breeding. I need to take some pics of the big black hen that came from eggs from Mikaela. She is my choice of all my hens but I should probably run her by those of you who know more than I do. Should I be searching for more eggs from breeders or just start with what I have and cull hard each year?

You're welcome! I'd keep that male and let him finish, but ditch the pullet. Patience is hard (ask Mikaela how often I whine in FB chat about it not being breeding/hatching season yet, or birds not being ready for show. LOL)

Since I haven't seen it posted here yet, this pullet is the Best of Breed from the Ohio National, shown by Harvey Noel, Photo Credit Mike House.

Thanks, Mikaela! This pullet is small so I was pretty sure that I wouldn't breed her. Thank you for the confirmation. So, you have an idea of Thor's parentage, huh?

Unfortunately, I only have one white hen and I do know where she came from!

She is on the smaller side like my blue pullet with a pinched tail. I had only planned on breeding her to Gandalf since he was such a big brute with a wide tail spread. My white breeding program screeched to a halt with his death. Maybe I'll have to resurrect it!

Well, looking at each of my roos, the one hen that I have that would be good for breeding to each of them is my black hen from you. She is going to be one popular lady! I may have to post pics of each of the boys and we can play The Dating Game!

Just collecting census info, if anyone is lurking this thread and either raises or has friends who raise Langshans in District 1 (WA, OR, ID, MT, AK) I'd love to know about it.

Matt,

Have you contacted Richard to get a listing of all the members? I did and went through all of them to find out which ones were members in my district. Never heard of alot of them and kinda wonder if some are still alive, but I hope to get into contact with all of them and keep that contact up so I'll know how they've placed, etc.! Good idea getting the "census" going!

Not yet, I suppose I need to, I'm sure I have his e-mail somewhere. I just figured this district might have people that have them but are not members and wanted to reach out to them too.

I've been following the thread but too busy to reply due to bringing a puppy home two weeks ago.

BGMatt my roosts are 30 inches off the wood floor. I then typically have 5 or 6 inches of shavings on top of the wood for them to land on. I've been getting away with it.

That Ohio National pullet makes mine look like a flock of backyard chickens.

Last time I wrote in I was planning on posting pictures of two cockerels that are about 8+ months. I have my original cock, and would like to use one of these to start two clans. I don't think either of these are great but at least they're bigger sized. I'm going to start with what I've got. I know they are too young to judge fairly. I need to get rid of at least one or two cockerels, the noise level is starting to concern me. I'll follow with one post of bachelor #1, then bachelor #2, then both together.

I think I know which one may have more potential but I'ld like opinions.
